Ti-nspire Cas Software-teacher Review

The TI-Nspire CAS is an improved version of theTI-89 calculator. Like the TI-89 it has graphing and symbolic capability as well as the usual calculator functions. What is new in this calculator over the TI-89? The features that I have been able to identify and use are a definite improvement. One feature is that there are templates for most of the operations needed in calculus. These include integration, differentiation, limit, product, and others. The templates make it less likely that there are syntax errors in entering a calculation. The templates can also be used in programs as well as doing individual calculations.
It is possible to organize problems and documents on the TI-Nspire CAS. You can save work as documents. The documents have pages to organize the work into logical divisions. Your work can be saved and retrieved in an organized way. It is also possible to have more than one window displayed at a time. By this means you can monitor a graph as a parameter is changed or you can immediately see the effect of changing some part of a program.
The software version of the TI-Nspire CAS calculator is invaluable for those using the calculator in the classroom. Now you can bring a laptop to class with the software installed. By connecting the laptop to a projector, you can now teach the use of the calculator very effectively. The display is more detailed than projecting the calculator display. With the software version is also easier to write programs and do calculations since you have the computer keyboard and mouse.
Are there drawbacks? The TI-Nspire CAS is definitely intimidating. Once you have learned to navigate its many features, it is very powerful. However, without help, you will have trouble seeing how to do even some of the simple things that you may have in mind. As the calculator becomes more popular, this will not be the problem that it is now. Now, there is no one to turn to when you are frustrated.
As an example, I created some functions. They were examples to see how to create the functions and use them. When I was finished I wanted to delete them. But how do I delete them? Being familiar with the TI-89, I thought that the process would be similar. The familiar ways in the TI-89 did not work on the TI-Nspire CAS. Now that I have figured it out, it is simple enough. But finding the solution to this and other problems can be frustrating for the beginner. A human guide would be helpful and for most people essential.
How does the software compare with Maple and Mathematica? The TI-Nspire CAS software is limited, but has enough capability to be useful for classroom use.

Ti-nspire Touchpad Keypad Review

I've used several different types of TI Calculators: A basic scientific calculator in elementary school (TI-30x), a TI-84 Silver Edition for Algebra and Geometry, and the TI-Nspire for Algebra 2 and Pre-calculus. When I recently got online and saw that TI had released the new touchpad keypad along with the new Nspire calculators, I ordered the new keypad right away. After all, this new keypad has a touchpad, so it must be great... right?
Wrong. It first must be noted that the touchpad is likely the best part of this new keypad. The touchpad functions reasonably well, only occasionally freezing up. There is a small rivet in the middle of the touchpad, which sometimes causes interference (this is also the only area in which you can tap the keypad to click, evidently they could not spread this feature to the other few inches of the touchpad). If you enjoy manipulating graphs by dragging various lines to different places and watching the numbers change... then you will probably enjoy using the touchpad. However, the touchpad is useless for doing the usual calculations. As would be expected, using the keys on the calculator is much faster for navigating the various menus on the Nspire.
Calculators generally have the same layout. The numbers are arranged in the same order; the plus sign appears under the minus sign, the minus sign under the multiplication sign, and the multiplication sign under the division sign. The makers of this new keypad seemed to feel the need to change this... The results, well, just look at the image of the keypad. These operations now appear side by side in groups of two (so if you're used to the traditional layout, it's quite annoying). In fact, they have rearranged a lot of the buttons on this new keypad, some of which include:
1. Instead of the traditional SIN, COS, and TAN buttons appearing, there is now just one button labeled 'trig'. Which means if you want to use TAN, you now must press the 'trig' button three times and then press enter. It takes even more button presses to reach the inverse TAN (of course, if you care to spend even more time you can select this using the touchpad)!
2. The original Nspire keypad had 16 round gray buttons. This meant simple one button access to the imaginary number, the heavily used value pi, various punctuation marks, etc. This new keypad has just 6 round gray keys, meaning you will need to press more keys to get to the same symbols you could access with just one or two keys on the original keypad. To use pi now requires two presses, the imaginary number and theta: three.
3. And perhaps the biggest move is that all of the alphabet keys now appear at the bottom of the keypad. This means a few things: (1)If you were finally improving your Nspire typing skills, this keyboard is a different width than the original Nspire keypad. (2)The keys are now even more cramped together, making it uncomfortable to type. Those with large fingers might have trouble typing. (3)The shift key appears in a completely separate area than the keypad, not very handy.
And now a few comments regarding how the keys feel when pressing them:
1. The alphabet keys make a loud and annoying clicking noise when pressed.
2. The round gray buttons also make the same annoying clicking noise.
3. The remaining white keys, the enter, ctrl, shift, var, and del keys all feel about the same to press as the original Nspire keypad keys (thankfully).
4. The remaining black keys (the ones in groups of two) require little to no force to press at all and make hardly any noise compared to the rest of the keys. The difference in the force required to press down on these black keys verses the white number keys is quite annoying when making calculations.
Overall, this is not a good keypad upgrade. If you're used to using the first Nspire keypad, it has much better functionality, so there is no reason to switch to this keypad. The only functionality advantage (besides the touchpad) this keypad has over the original is the button which allows you immediate access to the Scratchpad (which seems to be a relatively pointless function that was added to OS 2.0). If they had simply added the touchpad to the original keypad it would have been a great upgrade, but they didn't.
One last note, this keypad does come with a free registration code for the TI-Nspire Student software, so if you're interested in that, then this may be worth the price.

I happen to buy this product directly from HP. I had it for two weeks and the interal display broke. Called HP tech to find out about getting it repaired, and was told that it was my fault that it broke, and that it was not something that could be repaired, bottom line I was told I had to buy another at 160.00. I have had a complain into Hpheadquarters for about a week now and have not gotten a response. Next step is the better business bereau.

This calculator is a great uprgrade from the Ti-84 and Ti-89 series. It is more that worth the price. Not many people have them only because the Ti-84 are recommended by schools. They are recommended by schools because that is what their teachers and instructors know how to use and therefore are familiar with the operations. If you go with the Ti-Nspire, which I highly recommend, buy the Ti-Nspire for Dummies at the same time because you won't find many people in which to ask for advice. Within a week you will be light years ahead of all of the Ti-89 and Ti-84 users if you go through the dummies book.

This is the best graphing calculator you can buy for under $100, period. I teach mathematics, and have used everything you can imagine, from TI to HP to Sharp and Canon, and this is the fastest sub-$100 graphing calc out there, nearly twice as fast to draw functions as the TI 84, which runs at least $20 more ($35 more at educational prices). It is also faster than my first generation TI89, and unlike the TI89, is legal to be used for ACT and SAT tests.
The menu navigation takes a few minutes to learn, but then it is easy, and much faster to do most things, compared to the TI and other calcs. For instance, it takes four button presses to find the zeroes of a quadratic, rather than the nine (or more) it takes on a TI.
The USB port means you can use it to write to a computer screen with the downloadable software, as well as use the computer to write to the calc; (you must supply the USB cable), and you can also hook to other Casios with the included non-USB wire.
The manual is online, or in a CD included with the calculators I bought. (is that still true?)
The screen isn't the best around, but is plenty good enough for my 45 year old eyes.
If you want a calc that will get you through anything from Algebra to Calculus and beyond, this is the one.

Casio ClassPad 300 Touch-Screen Graphing Scientific Calculator Review

Casio ClassPad 300 Touch-Screen Graphing Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I bought this calculator more out of excitement and curiosity than need. I thought a touch screen interface would be a wonderful thing for a calculator, and the descriptions leading up to the ClassPad's release were tantalizing and exciting. To sum up, what I feel I actually have is a strange mixture of poor planning and deep insensitivity to users' needs.
The display contrast is terrible. And if you try to remedy this with a strong light source, you trade horrible contrast for double images caused by shadows. The 'screen protector' Casio provides is no help, either. It adds a reflection problem to the mix.
The huge amount of screen real estate seems like it would be a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, it is used by the calculator's OS with stunning inefficientcy. Even performing basic calculations can be frustrating. As soon as you bring up the soft keyboard, a full half of your screen is lost. Answers or problems that exceed one line are simply truncated, followed by an ellipsis and a tiny, tiny triangle you must tap to see the rest of the line. There is no way to display the whole line at the same time.
The touch screen interface, the most intriguing aspect of this calculator for me (before purchase), is very poorly implimented. The calculator has a very basic keypad for entering numbers and basic functions. It also has dedicated keys for three variables, x, y and z. Oddly, they have no keys for storing anything in these variables. The only way to do it is using the 'soft keyboard', a touch screen keyboard with several panels of keys, all of which are quite tiny and very difficult to see due to the poor display. Imagine being in an engineering or technical environment and having to pull out a stylus every time you wish to do anything but the basic four functions. You cannot lay this calculator on a table and use it with one hand effectively, unless you wish to try to balance the stylus in your remaining fingers as you enter numbers, then flip it about to use it on the soft keyboards. And yes, you must use the stylus. All the soft keys are far too tiny to be used with a fingertip.
The documentation is bewildering. Individual commands and functions are often explained in relation to other commands and functins, and examples are given with no remarks or explainations. The upshot is that when you need to understand a function, you often have to make several trips to various indexes, back to pages that explain other functions, only to be driven back to the indexes again. To top it off, many functions have bewildering, counterintuitive names. What might be a self-contained 'if' command in another calculator or in a spreadsheet, for instance, is called 'piecewise' in the ClassPad.
The CAS is odd. As a matter of fact, the entire operating system is confusing at times. Menus are arranged in strange ways, icons on toolbars give few clues as to what function they perform. The built-in applications are not even loosly tied together, save by obscure system variables whose names are all but meaningless to humans. There's a plethora of functions and commands, but there is odd and glaring omissions as well. Who has seen a recent scientific calculator, for instance, that has no engineering format for the display? Only the ClassPad.
Programmability of this calculator is weak. It is especially difficult to prompt users for input, as there are odd limitations on things like input and output commands. And, of course, the poor, difficult to use documentation does not help.
This is a machine with tremendous potential that is marred by poor implimentation, and after having one for some years now, I see no signs of improvement. I would strongly advise anyone considering this calculator to visit the Universal Calculator Forum's ClassPad area. Read it carefully before investing in this expensive but frustrating machine. In my book, it is not a practical calculator for anyone, though some students seem to like it. Use this URL- http://www.casiocalc.org/ and click on the ClassPad forum.

My science and math minded daughter used a loner TI-89 all through her senior year of High School and, after being accepted at a very good engineering collage, asked for one of her own as a graduation gift. My daughter could have asked for another model or brand, but she did research and was set on getting the TI-89. This was most useful for use in her AP Calculus and Physics classes so she checked and found that this would also be among the preferred model in her college classes.
This is a seriously complicated device with a large learning curve and is likely more calculator than most people will ever need, but for those that do need these functions this is likely the right choice. I have only used it a few times out of desperation and was able to navigate the basic functions.
Highly Recommended!

HP calculators are built to be used by professionals. They are built to a standard of quality you seldom see anymore. Unlike calculators from other manufacturers, people who use HP calculators tend to use them for a VERY long time! I have had my HP48g for 8 years now and it still measures up to the competition. YES RPN entry is different BUT it is FAR MORE efficient to use in lengthy or repetitve computations. Unlike Casio,Sharp, and TI, there is a tremendous amount of professional grade software for scientist and engineers widely available. There are games too. The HP48g is solid and it has an IR port as well as a serial port for connection to a computer or other device. This calculator is a powerhouse! If you are a science or engineering major and you want to be serious about your trade then this has to be a device you own!

This model of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is pink. The color may help ward off theft, but at the very least it is definitely not easy to misplace the calculator.
From the TI site you can find comparison charts, and for high school here are the main additions that the Silver Edition has over the regular TI-84 Plus:
It is for Precalculus, Chemistry, and Geometry. This has more memory and a few other bells and whistles, but the deciding factor may be if you are in one or all three of those classes. This also comes with downloadable SAT and ACT test questions to help a person prepare for those.
For the price, if you're considering this being used at least one year in high school and 4+ years of college, it's about $20-30 a year for one of the most helpful tools a student needs. Two thumbs up!

Texas Instruments TI-NSpire Math and Science Handheld Graphing Calculator Review

Texas Instruments TI-NSpire Math and Science Handheld Graphing Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Strengths:
The document management system -- multiple "problems" can be kept in the calculator at the same time, and each problem keeps its own variable names; good graphing capabilities; ability to split the screen and work with multiple views of the same problem; spreadsheet application. The calculator has 5 "applications" (calculator, graphs & geometry, spreadsheet, data & statistics, notes), and information can be shared between them.
Weaknesses:
The documentation is very poor. There are two user guides, with considerable overlap in the contents. In User Guide Part 1, which comes packaged with the calculator, there are 25 pages on the Graphs & Geometry application, and the information on how to actually plot a graph is barely mentioned. User Guide Part 2 comes as a PDF file, and has more detail, but is badly organized and missing a lot of information. For example, instructions for a number of operations say to "drag" something, but nowhere in the manual does it say how to do that.
Keypad: other reviewers have commented on the difficulty pressing the right buttons on the keypad. Even worse is the "mouse" operation. I finally discovered that dragging involves holding the center "Click button" while pressing the arrow keys on the "NavPad". It is very difficult to control the cursor with the NavPad, and doubly so when trying to hold down the click button. Also, what operation is done by a click or drag is dependent on where on the screen the cursor is, and it's difficult to control the cursor location with the level of precision needed.
TI-84 compatibility: This seemed like a great idea. However, as far as I can determine, there's no way to integrate TI-84 functions with TI-Nspire functions. When you put in the TI-84 keypad, you get a TI-84. With the TI-Nspire keypad, you get a TI-Nspire. If you want to transfer information from one to the other, it seems to be impossible. The only relevant information in the documentation about TI-84 mode is a warning that if you update the operating system, all your added TI-84 applications will be deleted.
Lack of software: The TI-84 has a lot of user-contributed software. There's almost nothing on the TI web site for the TI-Nspire. I also didn't find much with a web search, and some of what is available requires the CAS version. For example, there don't appear to be any built-in physical constants or conversion factors for units. I could switch to TI-84 mode and get them, but then what's the point of buying the TI-Nspire?
Summary:
This calculator does not appear to be well-engineered or well-supported by TI. I would recommend waiting to see whether they give it the support that it deserves.

Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator

The TI-89 is an excellent calculator. It has an absolutley HUGEfeature set, and is so advanced that it can basically do most math for you. My favorite features are the CAS (computer algebra system), which can solve a lot of algebraic equations for you, and the factoring function (I dont have to waste time factoring on paper anymore! whoohoo!). My old ti-83+ seems like a slide rule compared to this thing, but the 89 is still quite easy to use. In addition, not only is this calculator great for math, its great for games! There's a multitude of mathematical programs and games that you can find for free online. . . The only downside to this calculator is that the rich feature set can actually be a problem. A lot of students that use this calculator rely on it too much, and some of them barely understand any of the math that they are supposed to be learning. It is probably for this reason that it and its brother the TI-92 (difference between the TI-89 and TI-92 is the 92's qwerty keyboard, useless for a calculator in my opinion, and the 89 is smaller) are banned in some colleges, and on some tests, like the ACT's. If you've got the discipline not to rely too much on this fine piece of equipment (if you're a student), I highly recommend this calculator. But be warned, keep your old calculator around for tests that you can't use your 89 on, and NEVER rely to much on it.

I purchased this Casio ClassPad 330 through Amazon and Computer Brain Inc. I ordered the calculator on November 15 and I received it on November 18 via an express carrier. I am delighted by the responsiveness of Computer Brain and their working relationship with Amazon. It's an ideal partnership that gives buyers like me a great feeling of security, and attention at a great price.
I bought the Casio 330 AFTER I already purchased the Hewlett-Packard 50G AND the Texas Instruments nSpire with TI-84 keyboard. The HP is a quality product built to the standards of their long line of calculators. The TI nSpire represents great value for the price along with a widespread user community. I kept the HP because of its external SD storage capability although it will take me a long time to master the keyboard and internal functions. I'd rather not spend the time required with the HP to master its capability. I was a former jet aircraft pilot and I like to joke that the HP is more complex than my old aircraft cockpits. Regrettably, I returned the TI nSpire/84 because the display was so dim that my eyes hurt after ten minutes of straining. When calculators like the TI have adjustments for contrast, it's really an erroneous understanding because when you increase font contrast, you also increase the contrast of the background screen which means the font does NOT improve relative to its screen background.
The Casio 330 has tremendous contrast range which actually works. I even left the contrast setting at the default level because it is super, even for my old, tired eyes. The screen has stylus touch ability that HP and TI both lack. This makes the Casio operate a lot like a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). It's intuitive, responsive, and fun to work with. There are applications, functions, and modes of operation common to other high-end devices along with the ability to connect to a desktop. If you feel that Casio is limited to low-end, low-cost devices, think twice and give this calculator a chance. If you purchase it from Computer Brain through Amazon, you'll discover like I did that it's the perfect solution to other troublesome calculators. One last thing-the Casio comes with a hard-shell protective case, startup manuals, cable connectors, batteries, and the best news of all - IT'S NOT PACKED IN A BUBBLE-PACK which is often impossible to open. Casio comes in a nice, "retro" box.
