(More customer reviews)The TI-Nspire CAS is an improved version of theTI-89 calculator. Like the TI-89 it has graphing and symbolic capability as well as the usual calculator functions. What is new in this calculator over the TI-89? The features that I have been able to identify and use are a definite improvement. One feature is that there are templates for most of the operations needed in calculus. These include integration, differentiation, limit, product, and others. The templates make it less likely that there are syntax errors in entering a calculation. The templates can also be used in programs as well as doing individual calculations.
It is possible to organize problems and documents on the TI-Nspire CAS. You can save work as documents. The documents have pages to organize the work into logical divisions. Your work can be saved and retrieved in an organized way. It is also possible to have more than one window displayed at a time. By this means you can monitor a graph as a parameter is changed or you can immediately see the effect of changing some part of a program.
The software version of the TI-Nspire CAS calculator is invaluable for those using the calculator in the classroom. Now you can bring a laptop to class with the software installed. By connecting the laptop to a projector, you can now teach the use of the calculator very effectively. The display is more detailed than projecting the calculator display. With the software version is also easier to write programs and do calculations since you have the computer keyboard and mouse.
Are there drawbacks? The TI-Nspire CAS is definitely intimidating. Once you have learned to navigate its many features, it is very powerful. However, without help, you will have trouble seeing how to do even some of the simple things that you may have in mind. As the calculator becomes more popular, this will not be the problem that it is now. Now, there is no one to turn to when you are frustrated.
As an example, I created some functions. They were examples to see how to create the functions and use them. When I was finished I wanted to delete them. But how do I delete them? Being familiar with the TI-89, I thought that the process would be similar. The familiar ways in the TI-89 did not work on the TI-Nspire CAS. Now that I have figured it out, it is simple enough. But finding the solution to this and other problems can be frustrating for the beginner. A human guide would be helpful and for most people essential.
How does the software compare with Maple and Mathematica? The TI-Nspire CAS software is limited, but has enough capability to be useful for classroom use.

Called HP tech to find out about getting it repaired, and was told that it was my fault that it broke, and that it was not something that could be repaired, bottom line I was told I had to buy another at 160.00. I have had a complain into Hpheadquarters for about a week now and have not gotten a response. Next step is the better business bereau.

(More customer reviews)This model of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is pink. The color may help ward off theft, but at the very least it is definitely not easy to misplace the calculator.
From the TI site you can find comparison charts, and for high school here are the main additions that the Silver Edition has over the regular TI-84 Plus:
It is for Precalculus, Chemistry, and Geometry. This has more memory and a few other bells and whistles, but the deciding factor may be if you are in one or all three of those classes. This also comes with downloadable SAT and ACT test questions to help a person prepare for those.
For the price, if you're considering this being used at least one year in high school and 4+ years of college, it's about $20-30 a year for one of the most helpful tools a student needs. Two thumbs up!

(More customer reviews)I absolutely love this calculator. I used to have the Ti83 silver but then I decided to upgrade. This calculator has more space and well, it's pink. Not really a math person, everytime I walk into the math class room and take it out, it just brightens my mood. This calculator is easy to use, and very practical. You can use it for your highschool and college classes, and also for standardized test like the SATS. More memory is helpful because you can store more custom made applications. The silver edition lets you change faceplates as well so if you ever get tired of the pink, just pop it off and switch the plate. I love this calculator, and i guarentee you will be happy with your product.

If you are on a tight budget, check out the link above for the 9750 GII by Casio. This is the best bargain of all graphics calculators. About the only things I find missing on this 50.00 calculator are geometry and spreadsheet apps. Mathematically, this is a powerhouse.
But, if you have a few extra dollars, you should definitely consider the Prizm. It has all the capabilities of the 9750, plus a spreadsheet and the best portable geometry software I have ever used. The hi-res color screen makes this possible, and it is a real breakthrough.
When you are using your computer (Linux, Windows, or Mac), be sure to download the free software "GeoGebra". The Prizm is a portable machine which does the mathematics of GeoGebra.
And finally, compare the Prizm to the remarkable apps being developed for the IPhone and IPad. The Prizm excels since it has a genuine keyboard and gives such beautiful results. (It also has a battery which lasts 140 hours as compared to the two hours on an IPhone.)
This calculator is truly superior. I use it extensively for solving difference equations,
carrying out statistical analyses, solving calculus problems, and exploring geometrical relationships.
This is the finest graphics calculator I have ever used in my many years of teaching mathematics. It is a beautiful tool to make mathematics really enjoyable.

TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad Review

(More customer reviews)Call me totally impressed! I have used the TI-83/84 calculators for years but rarely the advanced features they offered. I often found them to obscure and annoying. The Nspire takes a powerful document approach that is totally different than the Ti 83/84 series.
This Nspire CAS Touchpad is quite a revelation. It took me all of an hour to understand (with the Dummies book at my side) almost all the functions it offers. The keypad is clear and obvious unlike the first versions of the Nspire. I was amazed at how much I could do with this device with so little effort. I have been using Mathematica for many of the classes I teach. The Nspire can replace Mathematica for most of the things we do in undergraduate physics and engineering courses. That is impressive.
The large screen is a bonus. The characters are clear with high resolution. The large screen means that everything you do is easier to see and analyze. The screen is adjustable but it is still a calculator screen. You need light to see it well as it is not backlit like LCD computer monitors.
Some people compare the Nspire with the Ti-89. Sorry, no contest. This Inspire runs rings around the Ti-89, a calculator I never really liked. It is faster, easier to use and read, and a joy to use. Don't waste your time with the TI-89. Putting a little time in learning the Nspire paradigm will reward you.
The Nspire comes with desktop software that duplicates the functions of the calculator. On a MacBook Pro, it installed right away without problems. There is a link included with the software that allows you to backup and update the Nspire as well as move files back and forth.
The Nspire links up with the Venier Go! and EasyLink sensors. I haven't tried this yet but will in the next week or so. We have LabPros and LabQuests for our classes, but it will be fun to try the Nspire anyway.
I have not been so impressed with a calculator since my very first HP-15C too many years ago. It's even more impressive than my first professional slide rule! I very rarely gush about a product, but this device is something I have been looking for a very long time.

Casio FX300ES 2-Line Scientific Calculator Review

(More customer reviews)My first scientific calculator was a Sharp. Then I spent many moons in the land of TI. I'm so fond of the TI-84+ I had firmly decided I was a TI-gal. Then, I tried to buy some for my classroom a night or two before the start of the school year and the store was out of TIs. They had this lovely calculator. I'm embarrassed to admit just how long I stayed in front of that display debating over whether I was willing to commit to an unknown brand, especially when I didn't care for the Casios I had seen before. Finally, desperate to have a few on hand for my students, I purchased them.
It didn't take long for my students to find all the neat features. I originally chose them for the permutation/combination features and was curious about how useful stacked fractions would be for high school students. WOW.
My only complaint (until recently) was that they are so fabulous, five of mine walked off. This was bad news...until...I discovered the next level up which includes imaginary/complex numbers. So for next year...I'm going to upgrade my stash and guard them more fiercely.
I only put four stars because I soooo want those complex numbers now and all the other features I'm thinking I can get. I still prefer a TI-84, but our students are not allowed to use graphing calculators on their end-of-course test so I want them to get comfortable with a calculator that will serve them well. I was wishing I could put 4.9 stars (or 49/10 stars as my calculator would say). This is really a wonderful little device.
