(More customer reviews)The TI-Nspire CAS is an improved version of theTI-89 calculator. Like the TI-89 it has graphing and symbolic capability as well as the usual calculator functions. What is new in this calculator over the TI-89? The features that I have been able to identify and use are a definite improvement. One feature is that there are templates for most of the operations needed in calculus. These include integration, differentiation, limit, product, and others. The templates make it less likely that there are syntax errors in entering a calculation. The templates can also be used in programs as well as doing individual calculations.
It is possible to organize problems and documents on the TI-Nspire CAS. You can save work as documents. The documents have pages to organize the work into logical divisions. Your work can be saved and retrieved in an organized way. It is also possible to have more than one window displayed at a time. By this means you can monitor a graph as a parameter is changed or you can immediately see the effect of changing some part of a program.
The software version of the TI-Nspire CAS calculator is invaluable for those using the calculator in the classroom. Now you can bring a laptop to class with the software installed. By connecting the laptop to a projector, you can now teach the use of the calculator very effectively. The display is more detailed than projecting the calculator display. With the software version is also easier to write programs and do calculations since you have the computer keyboard and mouse.
Are there drawbacks? The TI-Nspire CAS is definitely intimidating. Once you have learned to navigate its many features, it is very powerful. However, without help, you will have trouble seeing how to do even some of the simple things that you may have in mind. As the calculator becomes more popular, this will not be the problem that it is now. Now, there is no one to turn to when you are frustrated.
As an example, I created some functions. They were examples to see how to create the functions and use them. When I was finished I wanted to delete them. But how do I delete them? Being familiar with the TI-89, I thought that the process would be similar. The familiar ways in the TI-89 did not work on the TI-Nspire CAS. Now that I have figured it out, it is simple enough. But finding the solution to this and other problems can be frustrating for the beginner. A human guide would be helpful and for most people essential.
How does the software compare with Maple and Mathematica? The TI-Nspire CAS software is limited, but has enough capability to be useful for classroom use.

Texas Instruments Graph-Link Serial Cable for Windows Review

(More customer reviews)This cable is a very handy thing to have. It is extremely useful for calculator backups (a good thing to do every once in a while in case your TI crashes), and you can download a bunch of stuff off the Net to put on your calculator. ... /
The software for different calculators (I have linked to the TI-83, the TI-85, and the TI-86) is more or less the same; the confusing thing is that every calculator has a different procedure for linking. With some (such as the 86), you must be at the home screen; with others (such as the 85), you must be in receive (or send) mode.
One warning, however: This cable ONLY works with Windows. If you're a Mac user, you must buy the other (and more expensive) all-purpose cable. Amazon.com sells this cable as well.
All in all, I would highly recommend buying a Graph Link. Make sure you have an available serial port, plug the cable in and go. Have fun playing Tetris. :-)

I found much more clear and concise instructions for free online. ..Wish I would have done more internet searching before I wasted my money. Obviously, it does have some redeeming qualities, otherwise, it would not have received such high reviews from others (which is why I purchased it to begin with); it just wasn't helpful to me.

Ti-nspire Touchpad Keypad Review

(More customer reviews)I've used several different types of TI Calculators: A basic scientific calculator in elementary school (TI-30x), a TI-84 Silver Edition for Algebra and Geometry, and the TI-Nspire for Algebra 2 and Pre-calculus. When I recently got online and saw that TI had released the new touchpad keypad along with the new Nspire calculators, I ordered the new keypad right away. After all, this new keypad has a touchpad, so it must be great... right?
Wrong. It first must be noted that the touchpad is likely the best part of this new keypad. The touchpad functions reasonably well, only occasionally freezing up. There is a small rivet in the middle of the touchpad, which sometimes causes interference (this is also the only area in which you can tap the keypad to click, evidently they could not spread this feature to the other few inches of the touchpad). If you enjoy manipulating graphs by dragging various lines to different places and watching the numbers change... then you will probably enjoy using the touchpad. However, the touchpad is useless for doing the usual calculations. As would be expected, using the keys on the calculator is much faster for navigating the various menus on the Nspire.
Calculators generally have the same layout. The numbers are arranged in the same order; the plus sign appears under the minus sign, the minus sign under the multiplication sign, and the multiplication sign under the division sign. The makers of this new keypad seemed to feel the need to change this... The results, well, just look at the image of the keypad. These operations now appear side by side in groups of two (so if you're used to the traditional layout, it's quite annoying). In fact, they have rearranged a lot of the buttons on this new keypad, some of which include:
1. Instead of the traditional SIN, COS, and TAN buttons appearing, there is now just one button labeled 'trig'. Which means if you want to use TAN, you now must press the 'trig' button three times and then press enter. It takes even more button presses to reach the inverse TAN (of course, if you care to spend even more time you can select this using the touchpad)!
2. The original Nspire keypad had 16 round gray buttons. This meant simple one button access to the imaginary number, the heavily used value pi, various punctuation marks, etc. This new keypad has just 6 round gray keys, meaning you will need to press more keys to get to the same symbols you could access with just one or two keys on the original keypad. To use pi now requires two presses, the imaginary number and theta: three.
3. And perhaps the biggest move is that all of the alphabet keys now appear at the bottom of the keypad. This means a few things: (1)If you were finally improving your Nspire typing skills, this keyboard is a different width than the original Nspire keypad. (2)The keys are now even more cramped together, making it uncomfortable to type. Those with large fingers might have trouble typing. (3)The shift key appears in a completely separate area than the keypad, not very handy.
And now a few comments regarding how the keys feel when pressing them:
1. The alphabet keys make a loud and annoying clicking noise when pressed.
2. The round gray buttons also make the same annoying clicking noise.
3. The remaining white keys, the enter, ctrl, shift, var, and del keys all feel about the same to press as the original Nspire keypad keys (thankfully).
4. The remaining black keys (the ones in groups of two) require little to no force to press at all and make hardly any noise compared to the rest of the keys. The difference in the force required to press down on these black keys verses the white number keys is quite annoying when making calculations.
Overall, this is not a good keypad upgrade. If you're used to using the first Nspire keypad, it has much better functionality, so there is no reason to switch to this keypad. The only functionality advantage (besides the touchpad) this keypad has over the original is the button which allows you immediate access to the Scratchpad (which seems to be a relatively pointless function that was added to OS 2.0). If they had simply added the touchpad to the original keypad it would have been a great upgrade, but they didn't.
One last note, this keypad does come with a free registration code for the TI-Nspire Student software, so if you're interested in that, then this may be worth the price.

Called HP tech to find out about getting it repaired, and was told that it was my fault that it broke, and that it was not something that could be repaired, bottom line I was told I had to buy another at 160.00. Casio - Pen-based Graphing Calculator (CLASSPAD300) Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned numerous calculators by HP, TI, Sharp, Casio, etc., but this new Classpad 300 Plus that was just released a few weeks ago with Casio's latest operating system (OS 3.0) and Classpad Manager 3.0 is just fabulous. It is now in common use in Europe, especially in Germany and also in Australia and in New Zealand. If you purchase(d) the version with OS 2.0, you can still upgrade electronically to the newest version using the Classpad Manager Version 3.0 directly which has a number of very nice new features/functions. This calculator should also be in common use in the USA as well, but regrettably the financial dominance of TI in our marketplace (and the impending arrival of the new TI NSpire calculator) make the likelihood of its acceptance very soon quite small, unless people like myself write reviews like this to promote educators to really get involved with this new product. The real advantage of both the Classpad as well as the TI NSpire calculator (which is not a pen-based product like the Classpad) is the great software that installs on PC's so that a complete emulation of its operations is possible even without the calculator being physically available. It addition, however the Casio (OS 3.0) will do now do Dirac Delta functions, Heaviside Step functions, Fourier and Laplace Transforms (including Fast Fourier Transforms, i.e., FFT's), First order ordinary differential equations, financial analyses, and of course it already performed complex number analyses, etc.
The operating feature on the Classpad that appeals to me the most however is the pen-based drag and drop operations using the Computer Algebra System (CAS) and the interactive menu between each of the numerous types of submenus on the device. Any operation worked on in one area (Graphs and Tables for example) can readily be copied and pasted into another area (Statistics, Spreadsheets, Sequences, etc) just to name a few of the numerous possibilities. The E-activity submenu on the Casio supports presentations to an audience and is the analog for the Classpad of the TI NSpire's 4 screens of information that can all be put on to a single screen at once (analyzing a problem using a geometrical representation in the form of a drawing or a picture, a word statement of the problem, an analytic or numerical equation solution and a graph of the results). Finally, the results can all be ported back and forth and printed/stored, etc. between the Classpad Manager software/emulator and the calculator itself which is simply fantastic to use. I have had this for almost a month now and I am just begining to appreciate what it can do for me daily in my work as a scientist. If students get exposed to these devices in a late middle school curriculum and beyond (after they first master many of the basics of mathematics and science), in my opinion they will want to continue to grow into math and science in their later years and become excited leaders in science and engineering that this country has been famous for having for most of the last 60 years.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this Sentry Graphing Calculator because of it's claim of "Compare to TI-83 calculator". I'm taking a Statistics class and this calculator is nothing like the TI-83. I was trying to save money, but now I'm going to purchase the TI-84 as previously recommended by my professor in the first place. I shouldn't have to read the manual to figure out which buttons are comparable to the buttons on the TI-83. I received great customer support from this vendor when the calculator went missing in transit, but I'm very dissatisfied with the product I received. Buyer Beware......the saying "You get what you pay for" is right on the money this time !!!

(More customer reviews)This calculator is a very good one and one that works equivalently in all ways using either direct keystrokes or stylus motions. It is largely no longer available which is a shame, but some of the internal electronics software is clearly getting quite outdated (and a little bit sluggish compared to some other more recent calculators, etc.). It performs really well however, so if you want to try a stylus-based calculator to see if you would like a much more advanced one like the Casio Classpad330, this is a great one to try out.
All the expected standard (as well as several advanced functions) and numerous data plotting options (with split-screen capability including the option of both a table and a plot displayed simultaneously, etc.) and numerous and reliable statistical operations for detailed data analysis, etc. are available on this fine unit. It also comes with a slide-on, standard heavy plastic cover and a very good manual with very clearly explained operations and examples. I recommend it, if you can still find it, without any reservations.

Texas Instruments TI-89 Titanium Graphing Calculator Review

(More customer reviews)My science and math minded daughter used a loner TI-89 all through her senior year of High School and, after being accepted at a very good engineering collage, asked for one of her own as a graduation gift. My daughter could have asked for another model or brand, but she did research and was set on getting the TI-89. This was most useful for use in her AP Calculus and Physics classes so she checked and found that this would also be among the preferred model in her college classes.
This is a seriously complicated device with a large learning curve and is likely more calculator than most people will ever need, but for those that do need these functions this is likely the right choice. I have only used it a few times out of desperation and was able to navigate the basic functions.

GRAPHING SCIENTIFIC Review

(More customer reviews)This calculator is very capable of computing complicated algebraic equations. A lot of my classmates have a TI 34-36 and were having problems calculating fractions, or converting from decimal to fraction and back again. This is very easy to use and just a few minutes reading the guide will get you very familiar with how to use it. The bracket feature seems to confuse the calculator, so just use the parenthesis as often as you can. I was very surprised at it's capabilities, especially since I only paid $18.00 for it.

And I have the TI 83 with me anyway for the class I originally bought it for. Now, with the light weight keyboard I walk into other meetings/classes and in the space of two-three seconds it is up and "running" vs. my laptop friends who are just turning there laptop on or still waiting on it to complete loading.I was worried about the size of the font in the screen on the TI 83. No need to worry, it is very easy to see and is actually a delight. As for a note taker, I disagree with one of the other raters. The NoteFolio has menus and all and as a note-taker it seems sophisticated. The TI 83 has lots of room for memory and you can read it later or load it into your computer at home/apt. to print. The keyboard is full size and unlike other compacts I have used (my palm pilot GoType keyboard is much smaller). When I use this keyboard (for the TI 83) it is easy just as on my desktop at home. In fact I just type away. I recommend this to all. Real good way to avoid purchasing a laptop to take to class. I think I could even use this in the library to take notes! Again, one of its great advantages is it's light weight, ease in carrying, and use issue. I don't think you will regret this purchase.
