Feels cheap, uses 2 hard-to-find batteries, and dust builds up inside of the display. Oh, and the door easily broke on mine.

BIG CALCULATOR Review

BIG CALCULATOR
Average Reviews:

Product is generally what it's made out to be, with one notable exception. It is not a dual power item (just battery power), which was an important criteria for me (if you don't care about solar power, there are lots of other large calculators). Button layout is also different from the picture, but generally functional.
Overall the calculator works, but you have to be careful to press the large buttons right in the center, or your entry may not be registered. Not a big deal, but it means that you have to watch the screen carefully as you push buttons to make sure nothing is missed.
One other "nice to have" would have been comma displays in large numbers (e.g., 1,000,000 for one million, whereas the calculator displays 1000000).
Other than that it works like you would expect a calculator to; and the price is reasonable.

Casio Graphing Calculator Review

Casio Graphing Calculator

This is the best graphing calculator you can buy for under $100, period. I teach mathematics, and have used everything you can imagine, from TI to HP to Sharp and Canon, and this is the fastest sub-$100 graphing calc out there, nearly twice as fast to draw functions as the TI 84, which runs at least $20 more ($35 more at educational prices). It is also faster than my first generation TI89, and unlike the TI89, is legal to be used for ACT and SAT tests.
The menu navigation takes a few minutes to learn, but then it is easy, and much faster to do most things, compared to the TI and other calcs. For instance, it takes four button presses to find the zeroes of a quadratic, rather than the nine (or more) it takes on a TI.
The USB port means you can use it to write to a computer screen with the downloadable software, as well as use the computer to write to the calc; (you must supply the USB cable), and you can also hook to other Casios with the included non-USB wire.
The manual is online, or in a CD included with the calculators I bought. (is that still true?)
The screen isn't the best around, but is plenty good enough for my 45 year old eyes.
If you want a calc that will get you through anything from Algebra to Calculus and beyond, this is the one.

I've had the Victor V10 for several months now. It works the same as my old TI BAII Plus. I paid about half of the TI price. I am very happy. A lot of professors tell students to buy the TI BAII Plus. The students should buy the V10 instead and save the extra cash.
The calculator is a fully functional financial calculator. Very solid and well built. It has a two year warranty.

Today is the first day I used my calculator in a training session in the mortgage industry. My co-workers had only a business analyst calculator. When we used formulas to calculate with, their's had more buttons to use and was scattered in different places. Mine are all in the same row and it is more simplier to input. I got the answer faster and simplier. I was impressed. When you need the answers quick you want to be able to deliver them. You need one like this. It wont disappoint you.

HP 12C Platinum Calculator Review

HP 12C Platinum Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using both the 12c Platinum (call it 12cP) and 12C for study and at work. I use the 12C gold more often than the 12cP.
My biggest disappointment with the 12cP is its relatively slow processing SPEED vis-a-vis the predecessor 12C and its competition (the HP10B, TIBA2plus).
The 12cP is notably slower than the 12C especially when performing Time Value of Money (TVM) calculations.
Running both HP12s side-by-side with the same data input, my 12cP has been consistently slower by 50% as compared to my 12C.
If possible, I would suggest that potential users and buyers try this data set on both the 12C and 12cP before buying. Clear register. Find [i] after input [PMT]=-1458;[FV]=0,[n]=84,[PV]=103600. The HP12C would take 20 seconds "running" while the HP12cP would take about 30 seconds to give the same answer [i]=0.4059!
This apparent lack of speed is difficult to accept for a supposedly latest financial calculator upgrade from any manufacturer! It is a bad joke, considering that my 12 years old HP10B could perform the same TVM calculation in just 2 to 3 seconds!

However, both HP12Cs are great value for money if the user consider the TOTAL solutions and free website support and training which is available from HP. In addition, there are lots of literature and solutions written by third party users over the still ongoing 20+ years production run of the 12C. IMHO,in addition to excellent user support, the PROGRAMMING capability of the HP12c is the other major face saving advantage which put both the 12Cs over its TI challengers for now.
The good people @ HP may like to know that 96% of my fellow students are now using their competitor's Texas Instrument TI-BAIIplus! The BAII-plus is chosen for its 50% lower price and much faster processing speed. The relative slower speed of the HP12c/12cP does not pull the crowds from TI, especially when speed is much needed during stressful exams condition. A slower processing speed would also cancels off the advantage of learning RPN.
After using the misnomer of a sucessor HP12cP, I personally feel that the 12C is still very much the industry standard. However, it would be better if HP would consider incorporating some useful improvements like a [BACKSPACE] key if it is technically feasible. Also, seasoned 12C users of the RPN would not miss the ALG mode on the 12cP especially when it HP doesn't have ( ) included. The HP12cP is an odd ball ALG calculator from this viewpoint. A suggestion to the dear good people at HP, please let future HP12C GOLD upgrades remain as an exclusively RPN machine.

I would also be very glad if somebody from HP could highlight to me on which are the 10+ more (130+ total)improved functions on the 12cP as compared to the 12C (120+ functions) to help me justify the additional price of 28%+ paid for the 12cP in Singapore.
Both my 12C/cP sets were "Made in China" by probably the same HP OEM to reasonably high HP quality. At a glance, the HP12C gold apparently has better cosmetic finishing than the 12cP. In addition, the keys on the 12C does feel very much better than those on the 12cP.
In a nutshell, the 12cP is more of "an alternative to 12C with ALG mode" than an upgrade or a sucessor of the 12C GOLD. When choosing between the 12C or 12cP, it is wiser to go for the 12C the "good old" 12C or 12C GOLD!
Smart consumers who do not need extra memory for programming and the ALG mode, should go for GOLD, buy the 12C GOLD standard until HP could produce a real and wholehearted improvement of the 12C line.
Thank you for reading my personal user experience with the HP12c PLATINUM.

I am a math teacher at a new private Bronx high school, and compared the TI-83 with the Casio in numerous regards before deciding which one our school would use. Hands down, the Casio wins, and it is cheaper as well. Note - I do not work for Casio or TI.
A) The calculator is more user friendly. The options are menu driven in a more intuitive way. What took me a minute or two to locate and figure out out the TI, took less than half the time on the Casio. Don't trust me- see for yourself.
B) The Casio is slightly faster than the TI
C)Features: The casio adds a dynamic graphing system (lets you change a coefficient and watch the graph change), which is very useful when teaching. I also like the EQUA feature, which lets my students calculate 2/3 equations, 2/3 unknowns, and solve quadratic or polynomial equations. Maybe the TI does this too, but I couln't figure it out.
D) The color thing I suppose is nice, but I use the CFX-9750, which is black and white and cheaper.
The only downside is that most colleges use the TI's, unfortunately. I liken it to most places using Microsoft when there are better alternatives out there (monopoly power). Anyway, a student who uses the Casio can do anything the TI-83 can do.
I'm a big fan, and my students seem to like it.

Sharp's on-line store wanted $14.95 for this EL-339h Elsimate calculator and at that price it was a good value. I like the durable metal casing, the large 12 digit LCD display, the angled prop below, the large keys and the ample spaces between the keys.
The only negative is using this for scientific applcations with three decimal points or more. The answers are just not accurate enough for advanced school or work in statistics.
This is an excellent desk top calculator, great for merchandise procurring that needs no bateries and is missing one feature, a printer (with an annoying AC cord and the hassle).

Don't let the novelty packaging fool you. This is a full-featured calculator with added features that set it above a run-of-the-mill unit.
- The display is large - 16 digits! That's up to quadrillions!
- The keys are sized and spaced for easy use, even for those with large fingers.
- There is a 'call back' feature that lets you review a long series of calculations. This is especially useful when balancing your checkbook to find that 10-cent error.
- There is a replay feature. Similar to the call-back but it automatically steps through all the calculations in the series.
- Business functions like mark-up, tax rate.
- Solar and battery power. If there's enough light to read the display, there's probably enough light to run the calculator.
If there's any draw back is that it is not pocket-sized. It will easily fit in a backpack and on your desk.

HP 12C Platinum Financial Calculator Review

I have been using the HP12C for about 20 of the 25 years it has been around. I love the calculator, and this is why I have used it for so long. I would recommend a purchase of an HP 12C to everyone. I also recommend purchasing the HP 12C instead of this anniversary edition. I only have a couple reasons for this.
1) The keys of the anniversary edition do not respond as well as on the regular HP 12C. For example, when I turn on the anniversary edition, I have to check to make sure it actually turns on.
2) The quality of the anniversary edition is just not on par with the regular HP 12C. For example, the screen on the anniversay edition is already getting scratched up. I have a twenty year old and a five year old HP 12C, and neither of them has any scratches on the screen. Also the keys are just not as solid and they don't have the nice tactile feel of the regular HP 12C. The anniversary edition just feels cheap.
So I would recommend skipping the anniversary edition for the regular HP 12C.

HP 20b Business Consultant Financial Calculator (F2219AA) Review

HP 20b Business Consultant Financial Calculator (F2219AA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The HP 20b is Hewlett Packard's new lower-end financial calculator. This machine is a very welcome addition to HP's financial calculator line. This calculator certainly exceeds the functionality of Texas Instrument's offerings in the financial calculator marketplace, which should make this a big seller, particularly in colleges. Remember that this product seems primarily designed to compete with TI's offerings.
The display. The HP 20b display provides a great deal of information. Numbers are displayed with a 12 digit mantissa and up to a 3 digit exponent. The range is from -499 to +499. Annunciators are in the top right area. The top row of the screen is where results are labeled with letters. HP has made this area of the screen that labels results scroll messages, which allows for messages longer than the 9 characters that fit into this box.
Three operating modes. For the first time, HP has three operating modes on a financial calculator: RPN, Algebraic and Chain mode. RPN is a very welcome addition. It has been a long time since HP offered RPN on a fairly low priced financial calculator. Sure, it has been available on the 12c, 12cp and 17bII+ models, but has been missing from the 10b/10bII lines. LastX is there too, labeled ANS as the shift of the = key. The HP 20b also has a double-wide I key that functions as ENTER when in RPN mode. HP also provided two welcome shortcuts for RPN users. The otherwise useless parentheses keys serve as roll down and XY in RPN mode. A tiny little symbol in the bottom right corner indicates the shortcut function of the ( and ) keys. RPN is not an afterthought on the 20b.
Chain mode is what HP has used on their low end machine (10bII) for some time. This mode is algebraic without hierarchy such that 1+2x3= gives a 9 as an answer. The HP 20b has Chain mode but adds Algebraic mode. In Algebraic mode, fairly normal rules of algebraic hierarchy are followed, as you would expect. Parentheses can be used to alter the order of execution. The 20b can handle up to 12 pending operations.
Menus. The HP 20b takes a new approach to providing functionality compared to many former HP calculators. It is more similar to the 17bII+ in some ways than the 12c. Pressing one of 16 keys will open up a menu where you use a combination of the INPUT key and the UP and DOWN arrow keys to move between your choices. This approach has the benefit of greatly expanding the available features without adding an additional shift key. It is also a departure from the 32s, 32sII, 33s, 35s menu approach. The approach taken by the 20b is designed to be familiar to student financial calculator users, who probably have never seen or used one of these other models. This was a very defining characteristic of the 20b's design. It seems to be aimed at students who are used to the TI model. It is not meant to be a direct replacement for an existing HP model.
Bond and date calculations. The bond calculations are a welcome addition to the low-end financial calculator and include all the expected features, including call provisions. The date calculation menu provides some nice touches, such as working in either actual or 360-day calendar mode. It also indicates the day of the week.
Extended financial features. The 20b includes several extended cash flow analysis features compared to other financial calculators. In addition to the usual NPV and IRR, the 20b provides net future value, net uniform series, payback and discounted payback.
Scientific functions on a financial model. Well, not so much new as finally returned. For the first time since the HP 19bII calculator, HP has a financial model with functions such as these: trig and inverse trig in degrees or radians, and hyperbolic functions and inverses. At last! An HP financial model again with trigonometric functions! Why is this so important? It greatly reduces the need, particularly in college, to have two calculators. As a former college instructor, I can't tell you how many times people carried two calculators - one for their physics or chemistry class, the other for their business classes...all because their business calculators did not have trigonometry and other scientific functions. It is also very important to keep the functional comparisons level with the competitors, all of whom offer these functions on their business models.
The Probability functions in the MATH menu is a real gem. It includes FOUR common probability distributions and their inverses: the normal distribution, Student's t distribution, Chi-square distribution, and the F-distribution along with their inverses. This greatly increases the usefulness of the 20b for the student as well as professional.
Statistics functions too. Combinations and permutations are back, finally and on the keyboard. Without these, users had to manually compute them using the factorial function, which is certainly doable, but very manual. The factorial function computes the gamma function if given a real number. A random number generator is present as well. The other statistics functions work on data entered into the Data menu.
The DATA menu allows you to enter up to 50 pairs of statistics data. (Note: Memory is shared between the data and cashflow areas - the 20b has 50 slots for pairs of statistical or cashflow data in total). If you try to enter the STATS menu before you've entered any data, the 20b will enter the Data menu for you.
The Statistics menu contains a Descriptive sub-menu which provides two functions not seen on HP financial calculators before: standard error of the sample X and Y means, which are very useful for things such as hypothesis tests and confidence intervals. The Predictions sub-menu first asks you to choose a regression model. Six models are included:
Linear: a*X+b Logarithmic: a*LN(X)+b Power: b*X^a
Base e exponential: b*e^(aX) Base a exponential: b*a^X Inverse: a/X+b.
A somewhat hidden function is the BEST FIT function. When the regression model is displayed, pressing = causes the 20b to quickly fit all six models to the data and choose the model with the correlation whose value is closest to the absolute value of 1. The displayed regression model will be changed to the model that provides the best fit. If the display does not change, the model shown was the best already.
Other menus and features. In addition to loan amortizations, the 20b includes several depreciation methods other than the normal straight line, declining balance and sum-of-digits: it includes declining balance crossover and French straight line and an accelerated French method. The breakeven menu performs the calculations you would expect including solving for a target profit, i.e. a non-breakeven breakeven. The %calc menu is where the markup as a % of price and as a % of cost functions are found as well as part as a % of total and % change. The % change provides a useful extension by allowing for the number of periods to be specified before computing the % change, turning this into a quick compound growth rate computation if desired.
What else is interesting? The 20b provides a function no other financial calculator has ever provided built-in. When doing interest rate conversions, you can solve for any of these three if the other two are known: Effective rate, nominal rate or periods per year. Even on the venerable 17bII+, you can't solve for the number of periods per year unless you use the equation EffectiveRate = (1 + NominalRate ÷ (P/YR)) ^ (P/YR) in the solver. If you put the 20b up against a solver solution on the 17bII+ for this problem, the 20b will win. Hands down. It's really that fast. For example, if you have a nominal rate of 10%, how many times per year must this rate be compounded before the effective annual rate is 10.51%? The answer is computed instantly: 77.85 P/YR.
So, more often than once a week, but less often than daily. Worst case result would be a value for P/YR of 999,999,999,999 periods per year (a rather outrageous result). The 20b computes results of this magnitude INSTANTLY. There really is no delay. You just can't do that on any other financial machine using a built-in function. Be aware that a computed P/YR value is stored into the P/YR setting. If a computed value is a non-integer, you will get an error in the next TVM calculation. This capability is also not present on any TI calculator.
What are some tips? You can change the number of decimal digits shown without entering the menu by pressing the shift key then pressing and holding the shift key again and pressing 0 through 9. The 20b can display up to 11 digits after the decimal point. FIX 10 and 11 settings are possible in the MODE menu but not through this shortcut. Also, entering a value of -1 for the FIX setting in the MODE menu uses the 20b's opinion for the best way to display a number. For example, with a FIX of -1 setting, the 20b would display 2.718 with three decimal digits and a result of 2 with no decimal digits. Using the shortcut described above, you can choose this FIX -1 setting by pressing . rather than 0 through 9. So you would press shift then press and hold shift and press the decimal point. Handy!
You can also view the full precision of a computed number by pressing the "back-arrow" key. This key is a true backspace key and begins deleting the rightmost digit of the full precision of a number (not the displayed, rounded value) upon the second press of the key. However, the first press of "back-arrow" has the nice effect of showing all digits of a number. To stop this "editing" of the displayed number, press ON/CE.
Conclusion. The HP 20b is another sign that HP is still actively investing in the calculator market. This is a good financial machine that addresses many wish-list items financial users have had for quite some time, as well as providing a very nice set of math and stats functions for use by everyone.

Why would you buy a 1980's calculator? Because it provides the best combination of form and function.
While other calculators have gone high-end and become curiosities of mathematics and graphics, HP's customers do not want to let go of the 12-C, despite the fact that HP has more powerful calculators at a slightly larger price. Here's why I think:
Just the right set of features. The average Joe using a financial calculator needs no more than the HP-12C provides.
Sturdy and strong. The keys have a wonderful feel.
Fits in a shirt pocket.
Very reliable. They've had two decades to iron out any bugs.
Large user base. Most financial courses will use this as the calculator of choice
Buy this calculator, if you need a financial calculator. You will not regret it -- I daresay that it will still be around when your kids need their own calculators.

HP 10bII Financial Calculator Review

HP 10bII Financial Calculator

This new "II" version is a newer style of the older HP-10B, which will now go out of production. The new style has a smoother case and a more 21st century look, but the calculator and its functions are still the same.
I have used (and own) many of the available financial calculators on the market. I "recommend" the HP-10B to my university finance students, both graduate and undergraduate.
The HP 10B-II is a directly positioned competitor to the TI-BA-II+, but HP's entry is superior. The keys feel more solid, the machine itself "seems" better made. Having worn out more than one of each, my experience has been that the HP has more staying power. And, the TI-BA-II+ often requires more keystrokes to accomplish the same tasks (i.e., NPV calculations). ...
The HP 10BII has a well written manual, including examples on using the function. HP has the manual available on-line on their website for the inevitable time that the user needs it and has lost the original.
While there are cheaper financial calculators, it seems that this particular level is the minimum I would recommend to professionals or students. Less expensive versions, while saving a few dollars, miss important features. As a general rule of thumb, if the calculator can perform the "IRR" function, as this can, it will be able to handle pretty much any calculation into which the finance student, professonal, or banker will run. Lesser machines do not have this function.
Ironically, even larger fancier calculators, such as the venerable HP-12C, are in my estimation inferior as well. The 12C uses RPN logic which, while saving even more keystrokes, is simply foreign to most students. More importantly, some functions, such as the Time Value of Money functions, on the 12C require interpretation. On the 12C, for example, solving for the number of periods in an annuity, the value gets rounded UP to the next integer.
Strongly recommended as the best value in inexpensive financial calculators.

Casio Scientific Calculator (FX260SLRSC) Review

Casio Scientific Calculator (FX260SLRSC)

I have been using Casio electronics for over a decade now -- starting with first data bank and touch screen watches. The brand has never failed me, so I have chosen Casio FX-260 over TI and Sharp competitors again. The calculator is great for graduate classes in Computer Science and Finance for sure (this is what I am using it for), and I am certain it will be more than enough for Physics, Chemistry, and other sciences. Compact design, a high-contrast screen, rubber keys -- everything is just right. And if I want to do graphing, I will use Matlab. Highly recommend!
