If you are looking for a small organizer to carry around, this is for you. It contains a scheduler, which is very easy to use. It also contains a phone directory, that allows you to store address, email and various other information, such as instant messenger id's. Also, included are a calculator, time information for various countries, a spelling assistant, English to Spanish and Spanish to English dictionaries, and finally a few basic games are also included. The translator is good, if you need some basic information, this will work for you, there were some words that I couldn't find, but when I put in basic requests, I was able to find the translation pretty easily. Overall, nice little organizer, have used all the functions, and they are easy to learn, and in no time you are able to navigate through all the various functions.

Talking Merrian-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary for 5 Languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian Review

Talking Merrian-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary for 5 Languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian

I just took delivery of this electronic dictionary for five languages. I started looking up words in English to see how they translated. No entry for "irony," no entry for "scold," not even the German word for "scold." "Scald" but not scold, in English. It is a very weak dictionary, and I would advise you to skip buying it. I was looking for an Italian-English connection. The device is for a very simple, limited vocabulary, usually with a one-word translation of the word you're looking for. I own a Casio S2000 Spanish-English dictionary, and it is superb, containing five large dictionaries. I seldom cannot find the word I'm looking for. Apparently, nothing of the sort exists for Italian-English. But don't buy this Franklin. It's slow and weak. I don't know what they were thinking in creating this thing. I will return it. I should have listened to the reviewers before me here.

dictionary is very good. The speech option is poor. I am new to Spanish & had hoped that it may help my pronouncation - it really doesn't.
The voice is too tinny to take seriously. Don't waste your cash & go for a basic non-speaking machine instead.
I gave it four stars as the rest of the machine is really good.

Franklin TG-490 Speaking Translator Review

Franklin TG-490 Speaking Translator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello Readers,
If you are basically a trilingual American student who is interested in improving your language skills primarily just in Korean, Spanish, and English, then this device will definitely satisfy you (99% of the time.) However, it is true that the other Asian languages, especially Japanese, are somewhat rather difficult to use on this device. But, the Korean language definitely operates just like any of the other Western languages that use the westernized Roman Alphabet (such as English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese, which are all included on this device.) The problem with Chinese on this device is that you cannot input Chinese letters via the keyboard, because there are no Chinese letters on the keyboard to begin with! What you will need to do in order to input Chinese is simply to use the Westernized alphabet (your A-B-C's) to try to PHONETICALLY write out Chinese letters, and then match up your attempt with a list of suggestions, written in Mandarin. (As I earnestly tinkered with this device for the past two months, this particular observation that I made of Chinese seems to be true also for Japanese, except that Japanese is even worse, because as I would phonetically input Westernized letters, these letters would suddenly disappear simultaneously AS YOU TYPE (very confusing!) and then generate amorphously incomprehensible Japanese letters in the place where you had just typed westernized letters.) According to one of the previous reviews by a Chinese-American who supposedly claims to be fluent in Chinese, he reaffirms that this device's input method for Chinese will be a poor language learning experience. But, according to my Korean-American background (and my background of having attended U.S. public schools all my life, where I personally studied Spanish for four years when I was in high school) I definitely endorse this device, especially for the sake of improving your trilingual abilities in Korean, Spanish, and English.
In conclusion, I argue that the value of this device will incontrovertibly depend on what you PERSONALLY need. If you are English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or perhaps even Dutch, Polish, or Russian, and you are interested in a sufficiently simple device to communicate in Korean, then this device is the best one that I have ever seen yet in my life, and my life is of a committed Korean-American background. (The same goes for all you fellow Koreans out there seeking a vice versa language translator device, such as this one, in order to speak all of those aforementioned Westernized languages, beginning directly from Korean itself.)
However, the Chinese language on this device is not completely a failure, either. For veteran speakers of the Korean language (such as my own first-generation parents), they agree that knowing approximately 2,000 key vocabulary words of "Hanja" (Chinese etymological root words observed in the Korean language) is helpful to thoroughly use Korean on a daily life-long basis. So, based on my two-month experience using this handy device, I can confidently say it also very effectively stimulates and improves my fledgling understanding of the Chinese language. So, for all you fellow Korean people out there, you can relish in another benefit that this device will offer you: an engagingly fun and sufficiently excellent introduction to Chinese to enhance your lifelong pursuit to learn the language of your parents so you can gradually overcome the problems of misunderstanding them.
Furthermore, this device offers another powerful feature that would make any person, of any background, who is interested in translating between languages, consider buying this device: the Quiz application. The quizzes really are quite engaging and >90% of the words that are asked are frequently applicable in daily life, particularly in my Korean life with my parents, in which I can enrich my daily conversations with them simply by reviewing new words with them and/or immediately making conversational use of those new words while, for example, discussing current events in the news with them. (I hope that anybody with European parents or Korean parents or parents from any other bilingual background could somewhat relate to what I am talking about.) And, you don't have to worry about inputting any words either, if you are trying to do Chinese or Japanese; all you have to do is allow the machine to generate the quiz words for you, and then you can study them. But, overall, I'm certain I cannot do complete justice in advertising and trying to convey the idea of how great this device's application really is, simply with all my words here in this review; you have to see it to believe it, in order to understand how great this device really is and how worthwhile this device will be in influencing your life.
A few final words of a practical concern with the device itself:
The keyboard is a standard keyboard just like the one you are using at your computer right now. On it, you can input three types of alphabets: the Westernized Roman Alphabet, the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet, and the Korean Hangul Alphabet.
The keyboard slides out from underneath, much like some mobile phones I have recently seen. It is of high quality; avoid being misguided by some the previous reviews I have read, which wrongly condemn this device as being flimsy for having a sliding keyboard. From my experience, if you have gentle, machine-savvy hands that are good at taking good care of mobile phones, then you will experience the same quality of durability from this handy little device. (I suspiciously believe that those other people who reportedly experienced trouble with the sliding keyboard probably spilled food and/or oils onto the device, or probably rudely handled the machine by unintelligibly forcing the sliding mechanism off of its grooves...)
The night-light is sufficient. Even when two of my other colleagues and I were all leaning over this device outside in the darkening night to translate some English words into Chinese during an evening-outdoor-language-seminar (called "Chinese Corner on the Lawn") on the college campus grounds of the University of Virginia, we were all still able to read this device's screen perfectly.
The volume of the human-voice speaker can be adjusted efficiently enough, and is excellently audible. Furthermore, according to my parents, the Korean that is spoken by the device is clearly understandable and without any noticeable accent. According to one collegiate Professor of Chinese language here at UVA, the Chinese that is spoken by the device, is of "A- quality" regarding the quality of Chinese spoken from this device, and that professor also expressed the idea that this device is great for beginner students in introductory language classes, in general, to get acceptably good experience quickly and efficiently.
The dimensions of this device is: .75 x 4.0 x 2.75. Specifically:
Thickness (Height) = 0.75 inches
Length (Base) = 4.0 inches
Width = 2.75 inches
Therefore, this handy product is smaller than your everyday 3 x 5 index card, and is about the same thickness as a standard TI-83 calculator used in all American high schools these days.
Finally, battery life is great... I can often go for one week at a time, while intensively using it, before a recharge even feels necessary. The power meter is indicated in the main menu of the device, and is revealed in percentages. Usually, when the device starts from 100%, and a person intensively uses it for seven days without recharging, it may still have as much as 15% power still within. But, this device does NOT have a "universal" charger that is interchangeable with just ANY mobile phone charger, as one previous reviewer stated (it depends on what mobile phone you have these days... Specifically the device has a standard accessory USB port built into it, and so whatever charger you use, it must have a USB-style plug built into it.)
Also, there is a phrase book application available on this device, which is quite beneficial for generating some grammatically correct sentences rather than choppy word-for-word sentences. The selection of phrases is broad enough to get by in a foreign country that speaks any of the languages that are offered by this gadget with a very high probability.
Despite all that I have said in this review, you have to see it to believe how great it is. If you still aren't convinced, visit Franklin's website (at www.franklin.com) first to see a 3D tour of this device. (At the time of my purchase of this great product, none of Franklin's competitors, for this same product, demonstrated the same amount of useful preview information.)
Now, the final decision is ultimately yours whether or not to purchase this product. Nevertheless, in this age of limited precious time to shop for similar products, I have faith the best choice for most people, in this modern world, is this device.

I purchased this to be used as an electronic address/phone book. The technical details states it stores both telephone numbers and addresses. When I received the product, the front of the package states that it holds "addresses". On the back of the package, it states "email addresses". The product in fact DOES NOT store mailing addresses. I understand "you get what you pay for", but that shouldn't include false details!

Franklin Merriam Webster Spanish English Dictionary (DBE-1500) Review

Franklin Merriam Webster Spanish English Dictionary (DBE-1500)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Franklin DBE-1500 is an upgrade / replacement to the DBE-1490. It's a full-featured non-speaking, calculator-like device (fits in a men's dress shirt pocket - barely) that contains the complete Merriam Webster English-Spanish dictionary / Spanish-English dictionary, English and Spanish conjugations, English and Spanish Phrases and the full Merriam Webster regular English Dictionary (a nice added feature). In addition to these core "books" it comes with a number of miscellaneous features such as SAT and TOEFL vocabulary lists, usage examples, English and Spanish grammar lessons and a few learning games (hangman, etc), a calculator, metric-standard measure conversions, and a currency converter (you obviously have to pre-configure the rates). You won't use much of this, but the added features don't get in the way.
The Merriam Webster dictionary isn't the best one out there, but I think it's as good a one as you'll find in any electronic device. The main difference between this and more expensive devices is lack of speech - a feature I didn't really want. (The speaking one is the BES-2150, which is actually a bit smaller.) It does a decent job both of picking up on misspellings and suggesting alternatives and of mapping conjugated verbs back to their root (both of which are shortcomings of hard-copy dictionaries). The user interface is simple and straight forward. The device boots up immediately. You can configure it to use either English or Spanish as the master (menu) language and set the default entry screen (e.g. boot straight to the Spanish to English dictionary). This means looking up a word is very quick and easy - much easier and much much faster than thumbing through a hard-copy dictionary. It has a configurable auto-off power-saving function, which is nice. There are also screen contrast settings, time settings, etc.
As for the user interface, the DBE-1500 is the same as the DBE-1490. However the case is redesigned. The flip cover hinges of the 1490 were thin and were on the outside back corners of the device. So, if you dropped it on a hard floor the cover would break. (That is the reason I ended up buying the 1500 after owning a 1490.) The 1500 has recessed hinges with about 4 times more surface area - It's a great improvement in terms of durability, but is not as easy to open by feel (while you're reading) and I find myself fumbling with it a bit when I want to look up a word. The liquid crystal screen is a bit sharper than the earlier model and it's noticeably faster (newer micro processor). The keyboard has a slightly tighter and more modern look (color scheme), but otherwise is the same. The device is pretty comfortable / easy to use. Basically the 1500 is the same as the 1490, but with a more durable case, faster more modern circuit board, and slightly sharper screen. Keep in mind that it's a $45 device, so don't compare its case and interface against a state-of-the-art $200 - $300 mobile phone / PDA.
Like its predecessor, the 1500 uses two CR or DL-2032 lithium calculator batteries. I read Spanish language newspapers on the train going to work, so use my dictionary every day + some at night and on weekends. The batteries in my 1490 lasted through 5 months of heavy use before needing replacing (much better than one would hope from AA or AAA alkalines). If you only use it casually, I'd imagine they'd last years (like a calculator). The batteries can be found in any U.S. drugstore or through Amazon for between $1.50 and $6. However, they might be difficult to find in some Central and South American countries, so if you're planning on travelling, you might want to bring a spare set.

Franklin TES-118 English/Spanish Translator Review

Franklin TES-118 English/Spanish Translator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a beginning Spanish student, I bought this little gadget because it boasted having a wealth of vocabulary and phrases.
I am disappointed with this product in several ways. First,
the size and design: it's very small which is fine, but the designers did two bad things, it's very hard to see the display
in any lighting, and the button(s) you need to use the most are
so small it's ridiculous. Second: The phrases are all preset, into categories. Forget about entering a phrase of your own. Many of the preset phrases are ridiculous, for instance, What is
your e-mail address? Why would a non-spanish speaking person
need that??? If you want to know where you can find a chinese
restaurant, you will need to look up each word individually, and then find out that "chinese" isn't in the database. So, have a
pencil and paper ready to construct your own clumsy sentences.
I gave it one star because it's better than having nothing. If
you were going to dash to Mexico for the weekend, this would get
you through. It's not user intuitive so expect to have to read
the booklet to find out how to capitalize a letter, as well as
using any/all of the functions. It's complicated, it's limited,
it's difficult to navigate. On the upside - you'll know what
time it is! There's a name & phone number database - it would
be a lot nicer to just be able to take a note - like what street
your hotel is on - or write down frequently used expressions of
your own instead of having to look up "What is the special
today?" every night at dinner. But, if your wife is pregnant,
goes into labor and you're panicking - this little gizmo will
come to your rescue. It's got that covered. A pocket dictionary
would be faster and more helpful.

Franklin TES-121 Spanish-English Phrasebook & Translator Review

Franklin TES-121 Spanish-English Phrasebook and Translator
Average Reviews:

I bought this because it said it had 800,000 translations and was fairly cheap, but I was left frustrated and disappointed. A few missing words: spinach, lettuce, lethargic, and many more. These may not be essential words, but every pocket or electronic dictionary I've checked since included those words. Also, there aren't 800,000 translations. There are that many verb conjugations (which isn't a lot if you consider that 1 verb can have 50 conjugations, maybe more). Also, some grammatical issues. The word "best" is Spanish is "mejor." However, this indicates that no, mejor does not mean best. "lo más bueno" means best. This is the equivalent of saying "the most good" in English. Same thing with the word worst. The word "peor" is not in the dictionary. Someone might be able to understand that "the most bad" means "worst," but for students or anyone else learning the language or trying to improve their Spanish vocabulary, this dictionary is horrible. Spend the extra bucks on the fantastic DBE-1470. That dictionary has it all. It also gives come context, and... well, this isn't a review for that product. The Franklin TES-120 is a horrible dictionary and I'm sure there are many other issues with it that I didn't spend the time finding. If you'd like to improve your Spanish, do not buy this product as you will be let down by its limited capabilities and vocabulary.

This product is a good one for the beginning Spanish learner --- once you figure it out! The directions that come with the device are terrible, and the operation was not intuitive for me. However, once you know what to do, it is easy and works the way we all want it to. I called Franklin directly to find out the proper procedure.
* This device will SPEAK the word that is HIGHLIGHTED on the screen *
1. Type the word you want to learn in the language you know.
2. Hit "Enter".
3. Wait for the translation to appear on screen.
4. Hit "Enter" again. This will highlight the word you typed.
5. Now, use the arrow button to MOVE THE HIGHLIGHTING down to the translated word.
6. Once the translation is highlighted, hit "Speak" and it will say the word out loud for you with proper pronunciation!I hope this helps.

Franklin BES-2150 Speaking Merriam-Webster Spanish-English and Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (BES-2150) Review

Franklin BES-2150 Speaking Merriam-Webster Spanish-English and Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (BES-2150)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the BES 2150 instead of the BES 2100 primarily because it has a backlight in the display. I assumed the performance would be the same for both units since they appear to be identical from all outward appearances. After I started using it, I discovered that every shortcoming of the BES 2100 that had been articulated in the reviews on this site have been resolved in this new model. This translator is perfect in every way starting with the size and the outward appearance. The case is very high quality and very stylish. The size is just perfect, both for portability and for the size of the keyboard and display. I also found this unit to be very easy to use, quite contrary to some of the reviews of the 2100. Also, there seems to be no appreciable lag between the time you press the enter key and the time the response shows up on the screen. In particular, moving through the conjugations is almost instantaneous, which was one of the slowest features of the DBE 1450 which would take, literally, several seconds to move from one verb tense form to the next. The 2150 moves between these conjugations nearly instantaneously. And, you can pretty much respond to all the shortcomings that have been articulated about the 2100 with the phrase, "the 2150 fixes that." As an example, someone stated that you had to go through some circuitous path to get the 2100 to speak the sample phrases that come up when you look up a particular word. Well, apparently, the 2150 fixes that because all I had to do was to highlight the particular phrase and hit the speak button, and voila, it says the phrase. In short, this is a high quality, powerful tool and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs the power this translator offers. Not everyone needs, or wants to pay for, that level of performance and sophication. This translator is a bit expensive.
