This is a handy little translator, except for one glaring problem: There's no search function. It's full of great phrases, but you have to know exactly where to find them to use them. If you're in a situation in which you need to find a phrase quickly, you can't search for it by keyword--or by any other means for that matter. The manual actually says there's a search function, but it seems to be referring to another model. The search function on this particular model is completely missing. Anyway, I had gotten it for my sister who was traveling to China (with no knowledge of the language whatsoever), so we returned it when we realized it simply wasn't practical. The seller was extremely helpful and offered me a refund promptly upon return of the item. We ultimately purchased the more expensive Besta MT-7000, which was a far superior machine that did everything we needed it to do--and it saved my sister more than a few times in China!

This instrument allows only limited use due to short battery life even when a new ones are gotten.
I also consider it a dinky dictionary -- it gives only minimal number of definitions and minimal description of definitions.

This is a terrible product. The electronic voice is not understandable at all. The device is much smaller than it looks in its picture. The keyboard is tiny and difficult to use. The product is not worth the price by any means.
I returned the product to Ace Photo within hours of opening it. Since Ace charged me a 15% restocking fee, I literally paid about $31.00 just to open and inspect the product. (I also paid another $6 or 7 to ship it back.)
I then wrote a bad review about the order. Ace called asking me to remove the bad review of the order. At first I refused, but then Ace promised to refund the remaining $31.00 so I removed the negative comment from the order. I now find that Ace only refunded me $20.00 of the promised $31.00. Of course removal of the negative review of the order was "final," which means I cannot reinstate my negative comments about the order. The next time I will "see the money" before I remove a negative comment.

dictionary is very good. The speech option is poor. I am new to Spanish & had hoped that it may help my pronouncation - it really doesn't.
The voice is too tinny to take seriously. Don't waste your cash & go for a basic non-speaking machine instead.
I gave it four stars as the rest of the machine is really good.

Babylon Handheld Hebrew-English Dictionary Review

Babylon Handheld Hebrew-English Dictionary
Average Reviews:

This is a very helpful and complete electronic dictionary for reading or writing Hebrew. Words are easy to find, it has a very broad array of phrases, flips between primary Hebrew and English easily, it's pretty simple to operate and read, is small and quite portable, and runs forever on a battery. Cross-checking for nuances of meaning is easy and thorough. I appreciate that it lists gender of nouns, but it does not automatically give alternate genders of adjectives -- you can enter what you think it might be in Hebrew, and if it doesn't find the right word, you know to try another ending, so indirectly you can even do that. It does not have any transliteration capacity, however, so it cannot help you with pronunciation. (I gather you have to sacrifice scope when you add transliteration.) A valuable tool -- I use it a lot learning Hebrew.

Franklin TG-490 Speaking Translator Review

Franklin TG-490 Speaking Translator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello Readers,
If you are basically a trilingual American student who is interested in improving your language skills primarily just in Korean, Spanish, and English, then this device will definitely satisfy you (99% of the time.) However, it is true that the other Asian languages, especially Japanese, are somewhat rather difficult to use on this device. But, the Korean language definitely operates just like any of the other Western languages that use the westernized Roman Alphabet (such as English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese, which are all included on this device.) The problem with Chinese on this device is that you cannot input Chinese letters via the keyboard, because there are no Chinese letters on the keyboard to begin with! What you will need to do in order to input Chinese is simply to use the Westernized alphabet (your A-B-C's) to try to PHONETICALLY write out Chinese letters, and then match up your attempt with a list of suggestions, written in Mandarin. (As I earnestly tinkered with this device for the past two months, this particular observation that I made of Chinese seems to be true also for Japanese, except that Japanese is even worse, because as I would phonetically input Westernized letters, these letters would suddenly disappear simultaneously AS YOU TYPE (very confusing!) and then generate amorphously incomprehensible Japanese letters in the place where you had just typed westernized letters.) According to one of the previous reviews by a Chinese-American who supposedly claims to be fluent in Chinese, he reaffirms that this device's input method for Chinese will be a poor language learning experience. But, according to my Korean-American background (and my background of having attended U.S. public schools all my life, where I personally studied Spanish for four years when I was in high school) I definitely endorse this device, especially for the sake of improving your trilingual abilities in Korean, Spanish, and English.
In conclusion, I argue that the value of this device will incontrovertibly depend on what you PERSONALLY need. If you are English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or perhaps even Dutch, Polish, or Russian, and you are interested in a sufficiently simple device to communicate in Korean, then this device is the best one that I have ever seen yet in my life, and my life is of a committed Korean-American background. (The same goes for all you fellow Koreans out there seeking a vice versa language translator device, such as this one, in order to speak all of those aforementioned Westernized languages, beginning directly from Korean itself.)
However, the Chinese language on this device is not completely a failure, either. For veteran speakers of the Korean language (such as my own first-generation parents), they agree that knowing approximately 2,000 key vocabulary words of "Hanja" (Chinese etymological root words observed in the Korean language) is helpful to thoroughly use Korean on a daily life-long basis. So, based on my two-month experience using this handy device, I can confidently say it also very effectively stimulates and improves my fledgling understanding of the Chinese language. So, for all you fellow Korean people out there, you can relish in another benefit that this device will offer you: an engagingly fun and sufficiently excellent introduction to Chinese to enhance your lifelong pursuit to learn the language of your parents so you can gradually overcome the problems of misunderstanding them.
Furthermore, this device offers another powerful feature that would make any person, of any background, who is interested in translating between languages, consider buying this device: the Quiz application. The quizzes really are quite engaging and >90% of the words that are asked are frequently applicable in daily life, particularly in my Korean life with my parents, in which I can enrich my daily conversations with them simply by reviewing new words with them and/or immediately making conversational use of those new words while, for example, discussing current events in the news with them. (I hope that anybody with European parents or Korean parents or parents from any other bilingual background could somewhat relate to what I am talking about.) And, you don't have to worry about inputting any words either, if you are trying to do Chinese or Japanese; all you have to do is allow the machine to generate the quiz words for you, and then you can study them. But, overall, I'm certain I cannot do complete justice in advertising and trying to convey the idea of how great this device's application really is, simply with all my words here in this review; you have to see it to believe it, in order to understand how great this device really is and how worthwhile this device will be in influencing your life.
A few final words of a practical concern with the device itself:
The keyboard is a standard keyboard just like the one you are using at your computer right now. On it, you can input three types of alphabets: the Westernized Roman Alphabet, the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet, and the Korean Hangul Alphabet.
The keyboard slides out from underneath, much like some mobile phones I have recently seen. It is of high quality; avoid being misguided by some the previous reviews I have read, which wrongly condemn this device as being flimsy for having a sliding keyboard. From my experience, if you have gentle, machine-savvy hands that are good at taking good care of mobile phones, then you will experience the same quality of durability from this handy little device. (I suspiciously believe that those other people who reportedly experienced trouble with the sliding keyboard probably spilled food and/or oils onto the device, or probably rudely handled the machine by unintelligibly forcing the sliding mechanism off of its grooves...)
The night-light is sufficient. Even when two of my other colleagues and I were all leaning over this device outside in the darkening night to translate some English words into Chinese during an evening-outdoor-language-seminar (called "Chinese Corner on the Lawn") on the college campus grounds of the University of Virginia, we were all still able to read this device's screen perfectly.
The volume of the human-voice speaker can be adjusted efficiently enough, and is excellently audible. Furthermore, according to my parents, the Korean that is spoken by the device is clearly understandable and without any noticeable accent. According to one collegiate Professor of Chinese language here at UVA, the Chinese that is spoken by the device, is of "A- quality" regarding the quality of Chinese spoken from this device, and that professor also expressed the idea that this device is great for beginner students in introductory language classes, in general, to get acceptably good experience quickly and efficiently.
The dimensions of this device is: .75 x 4.0 x 2.75. Specifically:
Thickness (Height) = 0.75 inches
Length (Base) = 4.0 inches
Width = 2.75 inches
Therefore, this handy product is smaller than your everyday 3 x 5 index card, and is about the same thickness as a standard TI-83 calculator used in all American high schools these days.
Finally, battery life is great... I can often go for one week at a time, while intensively using it, before a recharge even feels necessary. The power meter is indicated in the main menu of the device, and is revealed in percentages. Usually, when the device starts from 100%, and a person intensively uses it for seven days without recharging, it may still have as much as 15% power still within. But, this device does NOT have a "universal" charger that is interchangeable with just ANY mobile phone charger, as one previous reviewer stated (it depends on what mobile phone you have these days... Specifically the device has a standard accessory USB port built into it, and so whatever charger you use, it must have a USB-style plug built into it.)
Also, there is a phrase book application available on this device, which is quite beneficial for generating some grammatically correct sentences rather than choppy word-for-word sentences. The selection of phrases is broad enough to get by in a foreign country that speaks any of the languages that are offered by this gadget with a very high probability.
Despite all that I have said in this review, you have to see it to believe how great it is. If you still aren't convinced, visit Franklin's website (at www.franklin.com) first to see a 3D tour of this device. (At the time of my purchase of this great product, none of Franklin's competitors, for this same product, demonstrated the same amount of useful preview information.)
Now, the final decision is ultimately yours whether or not to purchase this product. Nevertheless, in this age of limited precious time to shop for similar products, I have faith the best choice for most people, in this modern world, is this device.

I thought this was going to be a great addition to my PC. Man was I wrong. It was a waste of money. The instructions were not clear. The installation did not go smoothly, and I ended up having to call technical support twice. Only after finally getting this installed did I realize it isn't interactive. What a disappointment. The way this works, if you suspect you've misspelled a word, you can go to the dictionary and look it up. That's old school. I am mostly a Macintosh user, and I was expecting something as easy to install as Spell Catcher from Rainmaker Research [...] Disappointed, I found that Rainmaker also has a Spell Catcher for the PC. It was an easy choice to make that purchase. The USB Merriam-Webster Disctionary/Thesaurus now makes a nice do-dad for a key chain. Maybe I can find someone who'll purchase it. Do yourself a favor... pass this one up... there are better alternatives.

Franklin Speaking Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition (SCD-2100) Review

Franklin Speaking Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition (SCD-2100)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've worked with 3 different Franklin electronic dictionaries over the last 15 years including an older Language Master and a Bookman unit that supports book cards. Compared to these units, the SCD-2100 was quite a departure in terms of form factor but the basic interface remains familiar and intuitive. The first thing that jumps out at me is just how tiny it is! The pictures don't do a good job representing the size...the unit is only about 4 inches wide. Despite the small size, however, the keys don't really feel any smaller and the screen is actually much larger and higher-resolution than the old 3-line display models. Also, compared to the old versions, the SCD-2100 is also very speedy when it comes to spelling corrections and normal operations.
Unfortunately, the fit and finish feels cheap and it takes considerable effort to even put the battery cover on properly. (If you don't put in on just right, it will interfere with the opening and closing of the screen past vertical.) I also noticed that the plastic casing doesn't feel very rigid, so I wonder how long it will survive in a backpack. Considering how much this thing costs, it's disappointing that the old units appear to be better in this respect. My final complaint is that the speaker isn't particularly loud, though there is a headphone jack.
The SCD-2100 has a very long feature-list and a few surprises that I did not expect. The main reason I bought this was for the Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, which in my opinion, provides vastly richer definitions for many more words compared to lesser models. (Instead of generic single-word definitions, the Collegiate version enables me to appreciate the nuances between similar words.)
It appears that in an effort to slap on as many features as possible, this device has now become pretty travel friendly. In addition to its small size and basic 5-language translator (English/Spanish/Italian/French/German), the unit also performs basic unit conversions (temperature/weight/liquid volume/lengths) and has calculator that can do currency conversions. (There's also functionality for inverses and square roots...) The only annoyance with so many operating modes is that more button presses are required to get to where you want to be. For example, to look up a word, you need to first power up the unit and then select the dictionary from the menu (which is thankfully at the top). Franklin has made an effort to alleviate this however, with the use of 5 function keys that allow you to switch between modes without going to the menu, though you cannot program the keys.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the device. Performance is much improved compared to previous models and is several times faster than using the Collegiate Dictionary on a book-card. Also, the new small form factor doesn't really compromise on screen-size or quality.
Notes:
No Book-man Card Slot
Won't dictate bad words, but they're in the dictionary
No speech support for 5-language translator
Organizer appears to be able to hold about 300 entries. Entries were retained during a battery change (~30 seconds).
Keys are rubber and make distinct clicks when pressed
Uses 2x AAA

I recently got one and i'm pretty satisfied so far. Features of this include:
1. Word of the day (random word everytime you turnon).
2. Super-jump (jump to definition of any word in the screen).
3. dictionary thesaurus switch given a word
4. wrong spelling suggestion
5. word finder (by using ? or * characters). "?" will match any character. "*" will match any one or more characters. ie, "an?" will match "and, ant, any, etc"
6. Organizer (clock, address book, Calculator, Converter, Currency)
7. It has exercises (Spelling bee, SAT, flashcards)
8. It has 7 games (anagrams, hangman, jumble, word builder, word train, link four, tictactoe
9. 5-language translator
10. Display has 3 font option (small, large, medium).
Given that it's less than $50, it's a pretty good product. The display is OK and readable (don't compare it to colored back-lit LCD screen). It doesn't have backlight bec it's powered by 2 CR2032 battery. Keys are good. Dictionary content is the typical Webster book (not the heavy and thick one). Don't expect all known words to exist.

Sharp Electronics PW-E550 Electronic Dictionary Review

Sharp Electronics PW-E550 Electronic Dictionary
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been thinking about buying an electronic dictionary since they first appeared on the market. I knew pretty much what I wanted in a device but until now, I've found them all wanting in some area that was important to me. This device is absolutely perfect for my needs. These are the attributes that I was looking for, in roughly most important to least important order:
It had to be easy and intuitive to use
It had to have a very comprehensive dictionary and thesaurus
It had to show (not speak) pronunciation
It had to be non-invasive (imagine using one of the speaking dictionaries in a classroom or library setting)
It had to be reasonably priced
The PW-E550 meets all of these requirements.
At the time I was considering the PW-E550 I was reading two books: "Being And Nothingness" by Sarte and "How To Be Alone" by Jonathan Franzen (as an aside, if you're not familiar with Jonathan Franzen I highly recommend checking him out). I decided to page through each book and write down a short list of words that I either did not know the meaning of, or was unclear of. I then took that list of words to my local bookstore, found the hardcopy version of "The New Oxford American Dictionary" and looked up my words. With the minor exception of "transphenomenal", I found all of my words in some form (with "transphenomenal" I was able to find "phenomenal", "phenomena" and "trans-").
To give you an idea of what I was looking for I unashamedly present my word list:
nihilates, transphenomenal, ontological, heterogeneity, facticity, thematized, interiorization, objectivation, vagaries, preponderant, exigencies, isolationism, milieu, preemption, multilateralism
When I received the PW-E550 the first thing I did was to recheck my word list. My experience was better than I expected. Not only did I find the same words and definitions, I didn't have to glance at the manual at all to figure out what to do. I just pressed the "DICT" button, typed my word and watched the list of words that matched my typing get smaller until my word (or a form of it) was displayed.
The screen has two zoom settings and the contrast makes the display easy to read. The entire unit could fit comfortably into a shirt pocket (both size and weight). The fact that it uses a single AAA battery (as a previous reviewer mentioned) is a real plus.
There was one feature that I did not think about until I started using the device - it would be nice if, when looking at a definition, I could look up any of the words in the definition without losing my place. That's when I picked up the manual and much to my delight I discovered the device can do this (they call it "Super Jump"). It's not as intuitive as the other features but once you've used it, it becomes obvious. Finally, the hardcopy version of the dictionary has pictures on some pages but the E550 does not. Again, not an issue for me.
I would like to comment on an earlier review where the author gave this unit a one star review. She complained that the PW-E550 is a dumbed-down version of the PW-E500. By dumbed-down, she meant it had fewer words than the E550. This is true. However, the PW-E500 uses the "Oxford English Dictionary" and its corresponding "New Oxford Thesaurus". That dictionary gives both English (as in England) and American definitions, likewise the thesaurus. This would be a personal choice. I don't need to see both "color" and "colour" in my dictionary but that's just me. To me it was like she was saying that she thinks a Jaguar is a better car than a Cadillac therefore a Cadillac is a lousy car. This is a great reference tool.
If you have any doubts about the contents of this unit, go look at the hardcopy versions. I am very impressed and absolutely delighted that I have such a simple yet comprehensive reference sitting on the arm of my chair as I read.

Franklin SCD-1890 Speaking Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition Review

There's no backlight neither any bookman slot. The picture gives the illusion of two speakers. This is not so, the speaker is the left one and the right is a dummy. To make matters worst, I simply cannot understand why there is no protective cover nor an included case for such a large lcd. I can see this device becoming quite dusty in time. I would have returned this item but this is nearly impossible for me since I had it shipped to my home in the Caribbean.
The blue font used is also difficult to read. You get a sort of shadow effect below each letter. Likewise when you initially press the speak button, you get a sort of crackling noise as the pronunciation of the word is started. This crackling noise however disappears when the speak button is repressed for the same word.
UPDATE: This product has now MALFUNCTIONED. A continuous deep blue screen is now visible. Pressing the reset button has no effect. The item was not subjected to any abuse, never dropped and stored in a well padded pouch.

This product is a good one for the beginning Spanish learner --- once you figure it out! The directions that come with the device are terrible, and the operation was not intuitive for me. However, once you know what to do, it is easy and works the way we all want it to. I called Franklin directly to find out the proper procedure.
* This device will SPEAK the word that is HIGHLIGHTED on the screen *
1. Type the word you want to learn in the language you know.
2. Hit "Enter".
3. Wait for the translation to appear on screen.
4. Hit "Enter" again. This will highlight the word you typed.
5. Now, use the arrow button to MOVE THE HIGHLIGHTING down to the translated word.
6. Once the translation is highlighted, hit "Speak" and it will say the word out loud for you with proper pronunciation!I hope this helps.

Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web Dictionary w/Calculator & Databank Review

Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web Dictionary w/Calculator and Databank
Average Reviews:

Review of Franklin/Merriam-Webster's MWD-450 and MWD-1440 electronic dictionaries
1. Lookups are slow on the MWD-450 (4-8 seconds is typical); response times are much better on the MWD-1440.
2. Definitions are shorter and simpler (often over simplified) on the MWD-450. The MWD-450 is probably better for a younger child (under 12), while the MWD-1440 should be better for teenagers.
3. The MWD-450 is missing many literary words and also some words that are important for understanding current events (e.g., "anti-Semitism" and "globalism"). The MWD-1440's dictionary, which is somewhat larger, contains "anti-Semitism" but not "globalism".
4. Displays on the two models have the same physical size, but the MWD-1440 displays more lines (5 lines instead of 3) using smaller and somewhat harder-to-read text.
5. Related word forms are not always shown. Here are two examples:
(A) If one looks up the word "naive", the noun form is shown as "naiveness". "Naivete", which is preferrable to "naiveness", is not listed as an alternative noun form. (One can, however, look up "naivete" separately).
(B) The MWD-450 recognizes "auspices" as a plural noun, but does not recognize the singular form "auspice".
6. The MWD-1440 has a slightly better keyboard; keys are squishy and badly shaped on the MWD-450.
7. Given that the MWD-1440 is aimed at college students, the calculator mode should include a more complete set of calculator functions. In particular, x^y (exponentiation), base-10 and base-e logarithms, and the sine and cosine functions should be provided.
8. On both models, the calculator mode would be easier to use if there were parentheses.
9. "Connect 4", which was one of the more interesting games on the MWD-400, is not available on the newer MWD-450 and MWD-1440.
