(More customer reviews)My install of this system went fairly smoothly, but it is an amazingly lengthy process, with many stages involving updates and bluetooth reconnects and such. Still, it all worked out and it never left me wondering if I was doing the right thing or not, unlike many hardware/software installations.
The keyboard, mouse and pad have all worked pretty well for me, and the media pad shows great promise as a home theater controller, but I have a couple of quibbles:
1) the mouse charging station is a piece of junk relative to the rest of the system - it's tippy, you have to fiddle to feel that the mouse is making contact, and the power cable easily falls out
2) the keyboard, on waking up, often repeats (many times) one of the characters you type in
3) I _suspect_ the software of periodically bogging my PC down, though I don't know that for sure yet
4) I can assign the keyboard media button to bring up iTunes (and other applications), but the media pad media buttong is not given the same choices for some reason.
Overall I'm very impressed with this, but I AM COUNTING ON LOGITECH to improve the software such that it sees its full potential.

(More customer reviews)Prior to getting this, I have been using a Dell provided Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, made by Logitech I believe.
Which means I'm probably a little spoiled for wireless products. The only fault was that the battery life was a bit less than I would have preferred. Indeed, I was also intrigued by quiet typing and water resistance claims. So, I took the leap and got this Microsoft set.
First the bad. The mouse is worthless. Really is. I've gotten used to the side buttons and other features of my present mouse. This mouse has the two buttons and a scroll wheel. The two buttons work okay, but the wheel makes for entirely random scrolling. It does not keep a steady speed, has no relation to the mouse setting in windows, and the average speed of scrolling is immensely slow, only a couple of lines.
Add this to the fact that affects both mouse and keyboard. The wireless connection is rather disappointing.
This set comes with a receiver that plugs into a usb port. The receiver is needlessly designed to look like an interesting addon. It is about the size of two mouses put together, with green lights on top that light up when connected. I'm a bit bothered by all the little lights computers seem to insist on and this just makes for more bother. If you could hide it, that might be okay, but the signal isn't strong enough. I have it right under my monitor and still get popups saying it has lost connection. It was really bad with the mouse, but still occasionally lapses with the keyboard, that is a foot away.
Any obstruction causes more problems. A real hassle. And adds to the general imprecision.
The keyboard itself is nice. The key noise really is significantly quieter. I've not tested the water resistance, but am comforted that it is there. The layout is a bit wider than other keyboards I've used, making for an initial bit of transition as I have to reach a bit farther for the higher keys. Those with smaller hands might find it uncomfortably wide. The programmable and media buttons are certainly handy, making for really quick access to programs that might not be always within an easy click.
Yet, I'm not sure such ease overcomes the deficiencies. I've already gone back to my bluetooth mouse. Now I'm using two usb ports for mouse and keyboard, a situation that may not continue and may get me to retire the microsoft keyboard as well. Which is sad. I wanted it to work better, but am ultimately frustrated by the wirelessness of the wireless.
It's not too costly, but the frustration it brings might justify either a little more money to get a setup that can be used without frustration, or invested in a non-wireless combo that provides all the functions without any batteries or bother.

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 Keyboard and Mouse Combo Review

(More customer reviews)As somewhat of a keyboard/mouse collector (16 mice and 12 keyboards) due to the "unfortunate" quirk of being left-handed and desiring a comfortable mouse, I've tried quite a few over the years. I bought this set because Microsoft advertise that it's Mac-compatible, which is important seeing as I use Macs primarily.
Previously, I'd been using the standard Apple keyboard (slim aluminum), but wanted a keyboard with a few function keys. I scoped out the Logitech G15, as I had the older flip-LCD version and Logitech now supports Macs with their new G-series Profiler software, but I decided against the G15 because Logitech annoyed me with their Desktop Wave Pro set - which inexplicably is NOT supported by their SetPoint Mac software, even though the original Desktop Wave set IS supported. Grr!
This set from Microsoft is my favorite Microsoft set in years. The keyboard is fairly slim for an MS keyboard, which I like, and the keys are somewhat low-profile, which I also like. It took me an hour or so to get used to typing on it, as it has a bit of a weird contour to it - not quite as weird as the Logitech Wave, but a definite contour.
As mentioned by another reviewer, the keyboard is loud. I don't notice anything particularly loud about the spacebar, but the keyboard is most definitely loud in general. This doesn't bother me, as I tend to like the clack of a keyboard, but I can see how other people might be bothered by it. There's no way I could type on this keyboard stealthily while talking on the phone, for example.
For Mac users, the newest Microsoft IntelliType software is fantastic. Swapping a few settings allowed me to set the Alt keys to be equivalent to my Command keys, and the Windows Menu key (next to Ctrl on the right side) to be Alt, which is convenient while gaming - as I have easy access to Ctrl, Alt and Shift. The function keys are all customizable, allowing you to perform special functions, bind them to applications on your system, and so forth. One minor nitpick is that although you can bind a key to open your web browser, you can't bind it to a specific website - so I cannot, for example, bind my Mail key to automatically open my Gmail website. A minor nit, but it may also bother some people.
Another minor nitpick is that the F-keys are insanely small and are right above the standard keyboard, and below the special function keys. It took me a little while to get used to this, and I had to disable the iTunes functionality on the media keys because I kept hitting them while gaming, and popping up iTunes in the middle of a game. Not good! Due to per-application profiling, however, it's easy to disable them when in certain applications.
Apart from the above, I really like the keyboard. It's slim, low, the wristpad is of a material that's comfortable, and the keys are very nice to type on once you get used to them.
The mouse - which I believe is a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 with a special white underside, instead of the solid black - took me a while to get used to as well, but I love it now. The mouse is very tall, which was a definite change from my previous mouse, a Razer Copperhead. It's ambidextrous, which is a big plus for me, and the sides are rubberized and very comfortable and keep it from slipping in my hand, which has been a problem with other MS mice.
The mouse is quite heavy, which I like, though others may not appreciate that. As is usual with Microsoft mice, the scroll wheel is heavenly - it scrolls so perfectly smooth, with just the right amount of tension. The rubber track on the wheel keeps your finger from slipping and gives good traction for scrolling. The scroll wheel isn't a click-wheel, but it's still very easy to scroll only one or two steps at a time, unlike the free roulette-wheel scroller on Logitech's new mice.
Though another reviewer complained about the loud clicks on the mouse, I don't think it's any louder than some Razer mice (Copperhead, Diamondback or Lachesis are the three I own) or Logitech mice (the G7, VX Nano and VX Revolution are about the same loudness), though it is definitely louder than some of Logitech's "squishier" mice, such as the MX610 and MX620, or the LX8.
I can also definitively say that the BlueTrack is amazingly responsive and accurate, especially for a wireless. After using it for a week, I still haven't had any problems with the pointer slipping or ghosting, or just plain teleporting all over. Very nice.
My only complaint - and it isn't a big one since I don't plan to travel with this mouse - is that although the transceiver snaps into the mouse, it's neither a Nano transceiver, nor does it snap flush into the bottom - it hangs out, which means if something brushes it enough, it could flop out. It would take a good bit of brushing, as there are four rubber teeth that hold the USB transceiver in, but beware if you store it in a laptop bag; your transceiver may be sitting at the bottom of the bag if you clunk it around.
All in all, I really am happy I purchased this set: it's a great value (combining a $40 Wireless Mouse 5000, and a $40 Wireless Keyboard 3000) for two high quality, rugged components - particularly the mouse. If you don't mind the loud clicks or loud keyboard, you'll probably love this set.

(More customer reviews)I was hesitant to buy this product because it seemed a little too good to be true. I prefer touchpads over mice because of RSI. Touchpads are much easier on my hands than mice and can be used on any surface, including leaning back in a chair and holding it in the palm of my hand. There are very few good options for external touchpads. The most common are the Cirque touchpads, but they are expensive and don't support multi-touch.
This cheap, generic touchpad is perfect for my needs and sells at a great price. There is a branded version at a higher price point that I saw on Amazon, but it is the exact same thing as this device, except it has a logo. Save your money and get the generic. Perhaps you'll lose out on tech support, but at this price, I wasn't that concerned about support.
The device is a bit bigger than the average man's palm. It is light but feels pretty solid. It is ideal for mobile use and it is easy to stow in a laptop bag, which I do. I carry it everywhere I carry my laptop. Why carry an external touch pad with a laptop that has a touch pad? Several reasons: (1) because of RSI I put my lap top on a mount (a Cricket portable stand when I travel)and use an external keyboard (I use a Goldtouch portable ergonomic keyboard when I travel). (2) This touchpad is more advanced than my laptop's. My laptop doesn't support multitouch and all the touchpad shortcuts that multitouch can provide. (3) This external touchpad doubles as a numeric keypad. I find using a dedicated numeric keypad far more comfortable than using the embedded keys in a laptop. If you use the calculator a lot on your laptop, having a dedicated numeric keypad is handy.
Installation was simple. Plug in the USB cable and windows automatically installs the drivers. No need for a CD or to download anything. I use it with Windows 7 and it works perfectly. I did not test on any other OS, but I assume that it will work fine on Vista. The manual says it also supports XP. Seems that Mac OS is not supported.
In addition to the expected one-finger mouse-replacement functionality you'd expect from a touch pad, it supports at least 11 two and three finder gestures. The configuration options are rather simple, basically allowing you to toggle support for various guestures on and off. You can't create your own gestures or map gestures to your own programs. You also can't us this for hand writing or doodling. It also doesn't work with Scrybe, a gesture macro program that works with some touchpads. But what it does offer more than meets my needs and more than I would expect for such a low price.
I really like the fact that it doubles as a numeric keypad. Some may not like this, expecially since they add some raised dots to give tactile cues to differentiate the number "keys". Because of this it doesn't have the glassy smooth glide feel of many touchpads. This doesn't bother me, but I could see it bother some people. You toggle between normal touchpad operation and numeric keypad with a large "mode" button. When switch to numeric keypad mode, an led lights up. I thing they could have made device smaller if they got rid of the LED and mad the mode button smaller, but it does make it very easy to switch modes. When in numeric keypad mode, the primary and secondary mouse-click buttons are remapped. The left button fire up a new instance of the windows calculator and right button acts as a backspace.
The touch pad operation has been very good. It is rare for a tap to not take and the sensitivity is as good as my laptop's touch pad. Two and three finger guestures work as advertised and I now use the touch pad exclusively to scroll pages up and down, page up and down, zoom in and out, open windows explorer, and other actions that I had to use the keyboard for in the past.
This little gadget has been one of the nicest surprises of any recent purchase. It is cheap, works great, and travels well.
