Logitech DiNovo Cordless Media Bluetooth Desktop Review

I am actually using diNovo keyboard to type this review, and it is a bit of a struggle due to malfunctioning spacebar. :(
I did a bit of research on diNovo before buying it. Most online magazines (PCMag, CNet, etc.) highly recommend this product, noting its high price as the only drawback.
I got this keyboard/mouse combo a week ago, and I must say it looks and feels great. Separate keyboard and touchpad save you desk space. Mouse runs all day without a need for recharging.
I didn't experience any connection issues. It was only one time that I had to press the "connect" buttons on BlueTooth hub and mouse to have it re-detected because it stopped functioning all of the sudden.
The initial installation was smooth. I downloaded the latest drivers, got everything connected and everything went well from there... until yesterday.
All of the sudden the space bar (probably the most useable key on any keyboard) started losing response. I had to hit it harder to move the cursor and even then, at times, it would not respond. As I type this, I often have to hit the spacebar 4-5 times in order to make a single space between the words.
Another problem surfaced early this morning. The lower "fast scroll" mouse button would sometimes result in a "locked" fast scroll. This could be a software issue, I am not sure.
One thing is for certain, the assembly quality seems to be on the lower side. I reached this conclusion based not only on personal experience, but by reading other customer reviews and comments. Given the high price of this product, I am extremely disappointed, if not angry. This is probably the most expensive keyboard/mouse combo on the market, and one thing Logitech should have made sure is that it is of solid build quality. The product is produced by a Logitech plant in China, by the way.
***Update***
I have now received the replacement diNovo mouse/keyboard, and it's been working fine for 2 months now. The only complaint I have is that F6, F7, F8 keys are REAL stiff and hard to press.
Again, build quality is highly disappointing considering high product price.
On the bright side, I was pleased with Logitech support. They are easy to reach at toll-free number with virtually no waiting times. The replacement product was sent to me in timely manner.

Logitech's diNovo Media Desktop is a dramatically designed Bluetooth keyboard and MediaPad, optical mouse, and Bluetooth hub combination that transforms the user’s work space. The visually striking diNovo keyboard gives first-class comfort, while the separate MediaPad lets users remotely command today’s PC digital-media interface to enjoy their favorite pictures and musical selections. The MediaPad also displays e-mail or instant message notifications, media playback status, and provides smart calculator functionality.
The ensemble includes Logitech’s high-precision MX-900 rechargeable optical mouse. The diNovo also turns the PC into a Bluetooth control center, letting users synchronize data between their Bluetooth PDAs, cell phones, other devices, and their PCs. You've never seen anything like the MediaPad, a Bluetooth remote commander for all your digital media. Use it to remotely view, select, and launch your favorite jukebox tunes, video clips, or digital photos.
The MediaPad also displays e-mail or instant message notifications, and it lets you monitor media playback status, even when you're away from your desk. It's a numeric keypad with a built-in smart calculator. And you can view the time and date on the digital display. Thanks to the power of Bluetooth, you can do it all without wires.
But what is Bluetooth, anyway? Bluetooth is a standard wireless technology aimed at allowing users to make effortless, fast connections between various devices, such as mobile devices and computers. The sophisticated mode of transmission ensures protection from interference and increased data security and offers greater wireless range. Your Bluetooth devices by Logitech will work up to 30 feet away from the included Bluetooth wireless hub.

Mini Keypad USB 17 keys black Review

This mini calculator/keypad may be OK for occasional use, but if you are looking for something to use everyday, stay away from this one. The thing goes to sleep constantly - to save battery power of your laptop I suppose - but this feature is very annoying if you use a 10-key a lot. The device also constantly freezes up - I find I have to stick the end of a paper clip into the 'reset' hole on the back of the device several times a week. The keys are also stiff - you have to hit them hard, which makes it easy to miss numbers if you are typing quickly. I am ready to throw mine away and try something else.

Vivitar V2000 General Purpose Electronic Flash for 35mm Camera Review

Vivitar V2000 General Purpose Electronic Flash for 35mm Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good news: This is a great little flash - lots of power (guide number 79 at ISO 100) and it recycles quickly despite not being labeled as a thyristor model. Note: it is not a zoom bounce -- the bounce head does not extend (or swivel) but it is designed to be compact and that it is. The unit I bought from one vendor was as described and worked well with my Nikon N50. It had a port that was obviously for a sync cable but the port appeared to be designed for a (relatively) standard 2.5mm male miniplug, rather than the proprietary Vivitar interface you find on the 283/285hv professional level flashes (or the model 2500 bounce zoom series, etc.). I attached a Paramount Sunpak PC coiled sync cable to the flash (using the male miniplug described above) and connected the camera end of the cable to an X port on a Nikkormat FTn. The flash fired no problem. That is good news as it means sync cables are readily available for anyone who needs one. The unit works fine in full manual mode, using the guide number to calculate the exposure, and has two automatic modes that also seem to work very well.
The drawback to buying this item on Amazon: I liked the flash so much I wanted to buy a backup and so I bought a second flash from abesbeergarden. It was billed as being a model V2000 and used the same photo - a picture of a bounce flash. What arrived was an earlier model 2000 (no V prefix). The older model is NOT a bounce flash and has a permanently attached sync cable - mine functioned but this is not a good thing as once it breaks it cannot be replaced. Buyer beware: be certain that the device you purchase is indeed a BOUNCE flash (v2000)
To illustrate the difference I've uploaded a photo of the two devices side by side:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vivitar_2000.jpg
The older, non-bounce, flash is on the left. As shown, the V prefix on the newer model is not printed on the plastic case. The principal differentiating feature is the bounce head which is present on the V2000 and absent from the 2000.

Solid. Sturdy. Hefty. Old school. Mention "Vivitar 285" to photographers who've been around a while and those are the words that come to mind. The 285 (and its cousin, the 283), were long considered "workhorse" strobe units by working pros and have been around in various incarnations since 1972. I thought this was a great idea - a portable dictionary so that you don't have to get up to look up a word while you're reading. The problem? As far as I can tell, it only has words that are already pretty common. Some of the words we looked up that it didn't have include gelid & eidetic - okay, those aren't exactly easy words. Some others, though, like merlot, were surprisingly not there. It became a quest to find words that the thing DID have. We came up with one: onomotapoeia, and then gave up. I think this would probably be a great gift for a young reader, but for most avid adult readers (there were 4 of us), it just doesn't cut it.

I ordered a package of these batteries at the end of October, 2009 for my baby's thermometer. The battery lasted until now which was good, but when I went to change it because the display stated low battery, every single battery I popped into the thermometer registered low battery. I had them stored just like the package said "cool, dry, dark place" and not a single one works.
I will never buy these again as it is a waste when you only need one and when you do need to replace it the rest of the lot is dead. Nice for the environment.

My install of this system went fairly smoothly, but it is an amazingly lengthy process, with many stages involving updates and bluetooth reconnects and such. Still, it all worked out and it never left me wondering if I was doing the right thing or not, unlike many hardware/software installations.
The keyboard, mouse and pad have all worked pretty well for me, and the media pad shows great promise as a home theater controller, but I have a couple of quibbles:
1) the mouse charging station is a piece of junk relative to the rest of the system - it's tippy, you have to fiddle to feel that the mouse is making contact, and the power cable easily falls out
2) the keyboard, on waking up, often repeats (many times) one of the characters you type in
3) I _suspect_ the software of periodically bogging my PC down, though I don't know that for sure yet
4) I can assign the keyboard media button to bring up iTunes (and other applications), but the media pad media buttong is not given the same choices for some reason.
Overall I'm very impressed with this, but I AM COUNTING ON LOGITECH to improve the software such that it sees its full potential.

Targus 2.4 GHz Wireless Multimedia Keyboard AKB24US (Silver) Review

Targus 2.4 GHz Wireless Multimedia Keyboard AKB24US (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that even though I gave it 4 stars, I'm quite happy with it. You'll see why I gave it the 4 stars only.
I bought this because it had the low-profile keys (i've submitted several customer images for this keyboard). I didn't care so much for the media keys lining the sides, but that wasn't a strike for me. I figured that at least the media keys looked stylish instead of hideously parading across the top of the keyboard in some awful out-of-suite color. The added width of the keyboard is negligible, and I won't point it out as either a pro or a con.
I run the Windows 7 beta, and it worked perfectly (once I put the batteries in the right way). The wireless receiver is quite small, and I plugged it into the back of my big monitor, next to my wireless mouse receiver, and it works great without the line-of-sight. I tried sitting on my couch 8 feet away and the keyboard didn't seem to miss any keystrokes at all, even with my wife walking back and forth between it and the receiver.
Missing keystrokes was the thing I was most afraid of in a wireless keyboard, but it seems to be working out great for me.
The keys aren't silent, but they're quiet enough for me. I'm sure after a few more months of use, and they'll get softer.
The low key height is perfect, and the keys maintain a slight curvature to their surface, which is good. I came from using a keyboard that was too low-profile on the keys, and the keys were too flat. It was too hard to feel my way around the keyboard without looking at it. I don't have that problem on this keyboard.
The only problems I've had relate to my habit of only wacking the far left side of the backspace key, and the right-hand shift key; I sometimes don't get the desired effect from the key the first time I push it, probably because I'm not perfectly used to reaching far enough to hit it square in the middle. Even as I type this, several of my capital letters from the left side of the keyboard comes out lowercase first, since I wasn't pushing the right-hand shift key in the right spot :D I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.
The other oddness is the Home/End/Ins/Del/PageUp/Pagedown key layout. I'm used to being able to hit the End key while my hand hovers over the arrow keys. This keyboard instead puts the Home/End keys side by side, followed by the Ins/PageUp just below, and then finally the Del/PageDown just below that. I'm a programmer, and I honestly can't say that I like that orientation. I'm very accustomed to having Home and End right next to my middle finger, from the arrow keys.
The keyboard sides slope up a bit, where the media keys sit. I don't notice it very much, but when I feel around for the num pad's Enter key, I'm usually trying to actually find the edge of the keyboard as a point of reference for my hand. I sometimes hit the empty space below the media keys instead of the enter key itself :) The only other quirk with the keyboard (which has its justification) is that its driver is kind of a must-have, because there are no lights on the keyboard to show if num/cap/scroll locks are on. Yeah, kind of a bummer. (I can only honestly say that I want a cap lock light. The other two are meaningless to me.)
So once you have the driver installed, the num/cap/scroll locks appear in your system tray as little icons. (see my customer image of my system tray.) I don't really like that approach, but I know why they did it: because this is a wireless keyboard and it doesn't have an on/off switch, there's no sense making the keyboard batteries have to power the lights. So instead the system tray icons do the work.
*shrug*
Might want to look at my customer images that i uploaded, for a few more shots of the keyboard. I was hesitant to buy it at first, because there were no reviews, and only the one low-res picture. All things considered, I'm quite happy with the purchase, and I hope that this review can shed a little bit more light for those not sure if they want to buy it. For the $35 I payed for it, it is wonderful.

I have had this cordless set for several days now. Here are my thoughts:
First the bad news. There could be better quality control on this. The first unit I purchased had a right-arrow key that would not work properly (all other keys worked fine). Another reviewer of this model here said that the space bar did not work properly on their unit. I liked everything else so much, I returned mine and got another unit, which is now working properly. The only other negatives I can mention are: (a) the temperature on the numeric keypad ALWAYS reads 77 degrees; (b) the Media key on the numeric keypad always seems to launch the default media player, no matter what I set it to (the media key on the full keyboard works fine).
Now the good news. I love the sleek look and modular design of this set, and it happens to match my HP Pavillion Notebook perfectly. I love the small USB receiver. I love the profile and tactile feel of the flat keyboard. I love the features that let you use this both on a desktop (in my case a docking station) or on the road with your laptop. The mouse is the least sexy of the three main parts, but nevertheless works well and the off switch is a nice feature; its main appeal is that it can be used on the desktop and as a portable laptop mouse. The wireless USB reciever, while small (a good thing), still has a very sufficient range.
All in all, this set has solved a number of problems for me and I strongly recommend it. Just be sure to check ALL the keys, etc. immediately when you get it and exchange it for another unit if any of the keys do not respond.

This is a rather nice keyboard, especially at the pricepoint of 29.99.
I got it because I was tired of losing my mouse - the touchpad works great except for when it's cold. For whatever reason, below about 60 degrees, the touchpad doesn't register. Since it's wintertime, it's a minor annoyance to have to rub the touchpad whenever I haven't used it in a while.
I'm using linux, so I'm pretty happy that I haven't had any compatibility issues. The touchpad worked flawlessly the first time I plugged the unit it. The keyboard itself is extremely thin and light, and takes two AA, which is pretty nice. You can swap the touchpad into a numberic pad via a toggle button located above it. It's a pretty nice feature to include, and probably is the best use of the area, as I rarely use the touchpad, except for during spreadsheet data entry, at which point I tend to go mouseless regardless.
The only issues I've had so far are some sporadic problems with keyboard registers. I'm unsure as to what creates this problem, and it's probably more to do with my operating system than the actual device itself, as I've had similar problems with other wireless keyboards. I will note that it occurs less frequently with this keyboard, but that might be because the unit is new, most of the other keyboards I've picked up have been used.
The summation here is that for the price, this keyboard really can't be beat. The four stars instead of five is because of the registering problem and the touchpad difficulties with cold. I might revisit this review should the next batch of updates or a new distribution is released and these two problems go away (they'll indicate a driver problem, instead of hardware problem).

Microsoft Wireless Media Desktop 1000 (Black) Review

Microsoft Wireless Media Desktop 1000 (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prior to getting this, I have been using a Dell provided Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, made by Logitech I believe.
Which means I'm probably a little spoiled for wireless products. The only fault was that the battery life was a bit less than I would have preferred. Indeed, I was also intrigued by quiet typing and water resistance claims. So, I took the leap and got this Microsoft set.
First the bad. The mouse is worthless. Really is. I've gotten used to the side buttons and other features of my present mouse. This mouse has the two buttons and a scroll wheel. The two buttons work okay, but the wheel makes for entirely random scrolling. It does not keep a steady speed, has no relation to the mouse setting in windows, and the average speed of scrolling is immensely slow, only a couple of lines.
Add this to the fact that affects both mouse and keyboard. The wireless connection is rather disappointing.
This set comes with a receiver that plugs into a usb port. The receiver is needlessly designed to look like an interesting addon. It is about the size of two mouses put together, with green lights on top that light up when connected. I'm a bit bothered by all the little lights computers seem to insist on and this just makes for more bother. If you could hide it, that might be okay, but the signal isn't strong enough. I have it right under my monitor and still get popups saying it has lost connection. It was really bad with the mouse, but still occasionally lapses with the keyboard, that is a foot away.
Any obstruction causes more problems. A real hassle. And adds to the general imprecision.
The keyboard itself is nice. The key noise really is significantly quieter. I've not tested the water resistance, but am comforted that it is there. The layout is a bit wider than other keyboards I've used, making for an initial bit of transition as I have to reach a bit farther for the higher keys. Those with smaller hands might find it uncomfortably wide. The programmable and media buttons are certainly handy, making for really quick access to programs that might not be always within an easy click.
Yet, I'm not sure such ease overcomes the deficiencies. I've already gone back to my bluetooth mouse. Now I'm using two usb ports for mouse and keyboard, a situation that may not continue and may get me to retire the microsoft keyboard as well. Which is sad. I wanted it to work better, but am ultimately frustrated by the wirelessness of the wireless.
It's not too costly, but the frustration it brings might justify either a little more money to get a setup that can be used without frustration, or invested in a non-wireless combo that provides all the functions without any batteries or bother.

Targus AKM10US Wireless Keypad and Laser Mouse Set for Laptop Computers Review

Targus AKM10US Wireless Keypad and Laser Mouse Set for Laptop Computers

As a financial statement auditor this product looked perfect for fieldwork since both the mouse and 10-key used the same USB port. The product works wonderfully and doesn't have conflicts with my co-workers wireless mice. The only problem, which is somewhat significant is that the mouse uses two AAA batteries and I end up having to replace them every two to three weeks, which seems excessive. The 10-key runs on one AA battery and I have only had to replace it once in over a year so no problems there.
NOTE: I use this product about 30 hours a week on average

Calculated Industries 6135 Scale Master ProXE Advanced Digital Plan Measure Review

This is ideal for construction estimating. An example would be calculating the linear feet of wall on a print. by hand would take 30 Minutes, with this it only takes 5 minutes. It isn't perfect in real use - It is easy to bump the wheel and have it off a bit. But that is why it is called estimating! And if you any kind of volume of it you need this thing.

Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 Review

Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000

I ruled out Logitech keyboards because of their arrangement of the delete key. I'm very meticulous so it had to be a "standard" keyboard layout. I also wanted flatter and quieter keys, and I wanted them to be easier to press down. It's extremely easy to type on this keyboard, and although it's not as quiet as a laptop keyboard, it is much quieter than your normal run-of-the-mill keyboard that comes with a purchased computer. It's very sleek, and looks absolutely great next to my Logitech mouse. The glossy black finish just around the keys can attract fingerprints, but you're not supposed to touch that part anyway, and the rest of the keyboard isn't glossy like that. Battery life is supposed to be good, but I don't know for sure (I guess I'll find out in a year.) One of the things that shocked me was that this thing comes with real Duracell batteries, which is a real surprise in the tech world. Usually included batteries are cheap knockoffs from some brand I've never heard of. All of the extra buttons around the outside of the keyboard are useful and changeable through software. You can even assign macros to all them except the 1-5 and * buttons on the top (due to the functionality of that set of keys) if you'd like. This is a very sturdy, solid keyboard; stylish and professional-looking (which is good because I bought it for work!) I've spent $200 on a keyboard before, and this is easily the best keyboard I have ever bought. I'd recommend this keyboard to anyone for uses for anything from general computing to hard-core software development. 5 stars for this one.
Pros:
+ Build quality is top-notch
+ Flat, easy-touch keys help type faster
+ Most extraneous keys assignable to macros (including "F" keys)
+ Standard keyboard layout
+ Real Duracell batteries!
Potential Cons:
- Quieter than standard keys, but not as quiet as laptop keys
- Glossy black finish around keys can attract fingerprints
- "F" keys are smaller than normal
- Can't assign macros to the 1-5 and * keys
- 2.4GHz USB receiver and keyboard backing are white (in case you care)

I would actually recommend against this item. The range on the keypad either sucks or the item itself is faulty. I can have the keypad in my lap and my laptop less than a foot away and the keypad will skip numbers when I'm trying to calculate or type in a string of numbers. It also seems to independantly turn off the number lock key. Save your money.
