(More customer reviews)I was extremely disappointed in the quality of this product. The price was $199 and the quality might be worth $50, if that much. The quality was like a cheap child's toy. It was very hard to read, unless tilted in a certain direction. The automated voice was also extremely inadequate. This dictionary was intended to be helpful in interpreting the Korean language, but the audio was so poor it would be more confusing than anything. I gave this dictionary as a gift and I was extremely disappointed.

It also contains a phone directory, that allows you to store address, email and various other information, such as instant messenger id's. Also, included are a calculator, time information for various countries, a spelling assistant, English to Spanish and Spanish to English dictionaries,and finally a few basic games are also included. The translator is good, if you need some basic information, this will work for you, there were some words that I couldn't find, but when I put in basic requests, I was able to find the translation pretty easily. Overall, nice little organizer, have used all the functions, and they are easy to learn, and in no time you are able to navigate through all the various functions.

Franklin TRE-400 Seven Language European Translator/Dictionary Review

(More customer reviews)This item is $42.99 at a local electronics store. Amazon's price is much better, but the product has shortcomings, so I returned it. It has a primitive screen and it lacks many useful phrases. It claims to have over 210,000 words and phrases, but it is not clear whether that is the number of words in any single language (which is the really relevant number), or whether it counts all the other languages' translations (in which case it multiplies the relevant number times the number of languages it offers). It also uses "button" batteries that I found to be expensive to replace. Other reviewers said they found other translators that are "1,000 times better" than this one. I would like to know which ones people have found to be better than this one, why they are better, how much they cost, and where they can be found. I am specifically looking for English/French in any available units.

(More customer reviews)I thought this was a great idea - a portable dictionary so that you don't have to get up to look up a word while you're reading. The problem? As far as I can tell, it only has words that are already pretty common. Some of the words we looked up that it didn't have include gelid & eidetic - okay, those aren't exactly easy words. Some others, though, like merlot, were surprisingly not there. It became a quest to find words that the thing DID have. We came up with one: onomotapoeia, and then gave up. I think this would probably be a great gift for a young reader, but for most avid adult readers (there were 4 of us), it just doesn't cut it.

Ectaco PB-RU B-3 English-Russian Audio Phrasebook Review

(More customer reviews)This device seemed like a great idea at the time I bought it, but it really isn't. I didn't find it to be very helpful. The extra software is terrible. The only thing it accomplishes is you looking rediculous with the bulky hardly audible speaker necklace around your neck. Russian people will only laugh at you. I had to stop wearing it because it became such a spectacle. There are fewer phrases by far than a phrase book and it takes forever to do a search. This is the reality of this device; in Russia there is no time to fool with this thing. I used my Rough Guide Phrasebook for all my communication and I used this thing as a currency converter. The currency converter was really the only useful feature. The device was a waste of money and it's expensive. The Rough Guide Phrasebook is a small fraction of the price of this and is far more helpful. The Rough Guide Phrasebook has a Russian glossary section and many times I just handed it to the Russian person for them to look up the English word they wanted to tell me. My advice is to save your money.

AM99 Electronic English Chinese Talking Dictionary for Learning Chinese Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace the heavy pocket dictionary I usually carry around in my purse as I gallivant around China. As I am now at an intermediate learning level in Chinese, my checklist of important features might be different from that of other buyers.
Lightweight: check. It's still a noticable weight in my purse, but it's a relief from the thick pocket dictionary.
Sufficient dictionary size: check. I have already used this to look up hundreds of words and phrases, usually checking how it compares to my pocket dictionary. So far it has had almost every word I've looked for. As for phrases, it has some that my pocket dictionary doesn't have, but lacks others that the book does include. Overall, I'm satisfied with the number of entries.
Able to look up Chinese characters: check. If I see a character on the street that I really want to learn, I can use radicals to look it up. It's not easy, but it works the same way as standard dictionaries. BUT, the frustrating thing is this: when I look up a character, it doesn't tell me the pinyin. I can press the audio button to listen to its pronunciation, but the voice is somewhat muffled and difficult to understand. I often have to guess what the real pronunciation is and double check by looking up the character using pinyin. Also, there is another problem I didn't even consider. If I hear someone say "Jia(1) you(2)!" and try to look it up, I can't just enter the pinyin and hope to find a matching word or phrase. First I must enter "jia" and find the correct character. After I have the first character, I can then type in "you" and easily find the phrase. But if I only heard someone say the phrase on the street, I probably don't know what characters it's made up of. This makes it impossible to look up the phrase.
User friendly: fairly good. My biggest complaint is the inability to turn off all sounds. When searching for a character using pinyin, dictionary pronounces each part of the word I enter (quite loudly). Besides slowing things down and being almost pointless, it's impossible to turn off. I went to settings and turned off both "Music" and "KeySnd" sounds AND turned volume to zero, but the annoying voice was still audible. If I want to use this in class, I'll have to also plug in the earphones.
After using this dictionary for a few weeks, I think it's obvious that it was designed with Chinese speakers learning English in mind. As an example, you can't find "New York" or even "China" in the English-->Chinese dictionary, but look up the Chinese words and you'll find the English translation. However, it's still usable for English speakers and is the cheapest electronic dictionary I've found. It also came with ear buds and a soft black protective case. That was a nice surprise.
I would recommend this product, but be aware of the drawbacks.

When I received the product, the front of the package states that it holds "addresses". On the back of the package, it states "email addresses". The product in fact DOES NOT store mailing addresses. I understand "you get what you pay for", but that shouldn't include false details!

AM101 Electronic English Chinese Translator / Dictionary - Translates English Sentence / Phrase / Words to Chinese Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this translator after much research before coming to China to study Chinese. Many other brands were out of my price-range, so I was happy to have a more moderately priced model. I was also pleased that this translator was made for an English speaker learning Chinese, since many translators are made for a Chinese speaker learning English.
Overall, I am very pleased with this translator. It is easy to use, a great size to fit in a purse, comes with an English manual, has a very easy interface, and does a pretty good job at translating. One reason I was particularly interested in this dictionary was for its whole sentence translation (both from Chinese/English and from English/Chinese). The translation is by no means perfect, but when you are trying to get a complex idea across to someone who may or may not even speak the main dialect of China, I have found it quite useful. Unfortunately though, it translates the sentence into characters and it is a little troublesome to find the pinyin.
In other pros, I also appreciate the back light, the medical/business/law dictionaries (though they are not perfect), and the pinyin input. The voice pronunciation is adequate, and after hearing the voices on other dictionaries such as the well regarded Besta brand, I believe the AM101 is as good or better.
The extras in this dictionary are minimal, though it does have a rudimentary Tetris game which brought back memories of my childhood. I was also disappointed to find out that it didn't have an alarm. I have not used the MP3 function, though the voice recorder can be quite useful.
Overall, I am pleased with my AM101 and would purchase it again. I think it is especially beneficial for beginner/intermediate Chinese learners and for people who want a translator while traveling to China. For a helpful video tour of this dictionary, visit the company's website.

One final note: If you are studying abroad in China, I suggest you consider buying a dictionary in China. Many of my peers have purchased a Chinese brand dictionary that has character recognition for a comparable price, and they are all very pleased with it.

The speech, whether Chinese or English, is very clear and the speed can be slowed to better understand the correct pronunciation. The volume can be controlled to overcome even the loudest background noise. The size is perfect to hold in both hands and easy to type into the QWERTY keyboard. The product is good for both English needing Chinese translation and Chinese needing English translation. Every English word or Chinese character can be audibly pronounced and looked up. Also has common conversation phrases in English and Chinese. Can be used for beginning users and even the most knowledgeable in Chinese and English needing translation and Chinese character checking. I use it as a dictionary and spelling checker also. Can't say enough good things about the product. I am really surprised of all it's capabilities. It must have a very good processor behind all this.
The customer service is very helpful and courteous. One important note is the unit does not come with written instructions. However, the customer service directed me to their web site: [...] from where you can download the user manual as not all functions are intuitive.
Overall this is a great product at a great price, would buy again if need. Was hesitant on buying as there were no reviews, but now that I have used it I have no regrets and know I made the correct choice. So far I can't can't complain about anything that this translator has to offer, and actually have found it has much more than I expected the more I use it.

(More customer reviews)I thought this was going to be a great addition to my PC. Man was I wrong. It was a waste of money. The instructions were not clear. The installation did not go smoothly, and I ended up having to call technical support twice. Only after finally getting this installed did I realize it isn't interactive. What a disappointment. The way this works, if you suspect you've misspelled a word, you can go to the dictionary and look it up. That's old school. I am mostly a Macintosh user, and I was expecting something as easy to install as Spell Catcher from Rainmaker Research [...] Disappointed, I found that Rainmaker also has a Spell Catcher for the PC. It was an easy choice to make that purchase. The USB Merriam-Webster Disctionary/Thesaurus now makes a nice do-dad for a key chain. Maybe I can find someone who'll purchase it. Do yourself a favor... pass this one up... there are better alternatives.

(More customer reviews)I just got the electronic dictionary and I can already see its advantages over other models. First and foremost, the ring adapter drastically reduces your chances of losing it. In addition, it is nice and slim. It has a large number of words, often with multiple definitions. The converter function is also handy, as I teach Science (although it was bought primarily for the dictionary.) The display is easy to read and the keypad is not difficult to figure out. Its only weakness is that I find the keys a bit difficult to press. This can be solved by using a stylus and is the reason I give it 4 stars, rather than 5.
