50G Graphing Calculator, 12-Digit Pixel Display Review

50G Graphing Calculator, 12-Digit Pixel Display
Average Reviews:

Very powerful calculator. Dizzyingly powerful. Excellent display. Positive click buttons. If you're doing basic algebra, trig, logs, it is very easy to use. I find that when doing more advanced functions, I'm always needing to reference something in the manual to get it done. Sometimes hard to find functions on the keypad, since there are as many as 4 labels per key. SD card works well, but causes about a 2 second delay every time you turn on the calculator, which can be a nuisance when you're in a hurry. I like the very large RPN stack capability, as well as controllable font, where you can show more than just the 6 lines of the stack that it defaults to. Would recommend the 50g to anyone needing a lot of power. I've really only used the 50g in RPN mode, but it will do AOS also.

HEW48GII - 48gII Programmable Graphing Calculator Review

HEW48GII - 48gII Programmable Graphing Calculator

The calculator itself is probably a fine instrument. It may be great for users who have already learned somehow to use it. It may be fine for users who do not need to use its advanced features.
But if you need help in learning how to use its advanced features, documents supplied by HP are poor aids. By searching I found other learning aids (a book by Thomas Barber and a tutorial by Merv Newton at Thiel College) which fill some gaps. But still I wish I had a clear, well edited, helpfully organized users manual.
My difficulty in using the calculator does not pertain to its Reverse Polish Notation RPN. I have no difficulty with RPN.
To tell a story, I was trying to learn to use the calculator with the User's Manual supplied with the calculator by HP. Pushing keys in the sequence they suggest, I found myself locked in the equation editor when I reached the end of one section of the User's Manual. I could not figure out how to get out of the equation editor. The manual did not tell. I could not figure out how to clear or reset the thing. If you turn it off and then on again, it comes back to the same place. Later somewhere I found how to do a "warm restart" (Hold down ON while pressing and releasing F3).
I still hope to learn to use this calculator because I need the powers it promises. But good training manuals appear to be lacking

HP 39G+ Graphing Calculator Review

HP 39G+ Graphing Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Hp 39g+ is overall a decent calculator for you basic middle school and high school needs.
--Pros-
(1) The keys are plastic (finally) and much more stable.
(2) The overall system is more stable and less prone to crash.
(3) The Hp 39g+ has many more functions than the TI- 83+ (nearly 200 more) and when compared, it becomes overwhelmingly obvious that the 39g+ blows the Ti 83+ out of the water.
(4) The Hp 39g+ is overall cheaper, and better for your money.
(5) It can compute values up to the 499th power, while the Ti can only go to the 99th power.
(6) It has a Root Solver on it, which basically allows you to solve algebraic equations (example: 2x^2=67/6+56= SQRT6*sin(5^45)
(7) Less batteries are used in the Hp-39g+. Its three triple "A's" compared to four double "A's"
(8) The 39 has a bigger screen with more contrast.
(9) The Pretty Print option allows you to see equations in a form which they would look like in a textbook.
--Cons-
(1) The keys are noisy; they make an annoying clicking sound when on a surface.
(2) The connection to a computer is somewhat finicky, and a large amount of the programs on various sites don't work on the 39g+ or are way too fast. That is because the old programs were designed for a much slower system.
(3) Programs are essentially saved twice, so the same program as a TI on an Hp will be a lot bigger.
(4) The lack of flash memory on the 39g+ makes programs less secure. Overall, the 39g+ is a great calculator and I highly recommend it.

Casio - Pen-based Graphing Calculator (CLASSPAD300) Review

Casio - Pen-based Graphing Calculator (CLASSPAD300)
Average Reviews:

I have owned numerous calculators by HP, TI, Sharp, Casio, etc., but this new Classpad 300 Plus that was just released a few weeks ago with Casio's latest operating system (OS 3.0) and Classpad Manager 3.0 is just fabulous. It is now in common use in Europe, especially in Germany and also in Australia and in New Zealand. If you purchase(d) the version with OS 2.0, you can still upgrade electronically to the newest version using the Classpad Manager Version 3.0 directly which has a number of very nice new features/functions. This calculator should also be in common use in the USA as well, but regrettably the financial dominance of TI in our marketplace (and the impending arrival of the new TI NSpire calculator) make the likelihood of its acceptance very soon quite small, unless people like myself write reviews like this to promote educators to really get involved with this new product. The real advantage of both the Classpad as well as the TI NSpire calculator (which is not a pen-based product like the Classpad) is the great software that installs on PC's so that a complete emulation of its operations is possible even without the calculator being physically available. It addition, however the Casio (OS 3.0) will do now do Dirac Delta functions, Heaviside Step functions, Fourier and Laplace Transforms (including Fast Fourier Transforms, i.e., FFT's), First order ordinary differential equations, financial analyses, and of course it already performed complex number analyses, etc.
The operating feature on the Classpad that appeals to me the most however is the pen-based drag and drop operations using the Computer Algebra System (CAS) and the interactive menu between each of the numerous types of submenus on the device. Any operation worked on in one area (Graphs and Tables for example) can readily be copied and pasted into another area (Statistics, Spreadsheets, Sequences, etc) just to name a few of the numerous possibilities. The E-activity submenu on the Casio supports presentations to an audience and is the analog for the Classpad of the TI NSpire's 4 screens of information that can all be put on to a single screen at once (analyzing a problem using a geometrical representation in the form of a drawing or a picture, a word statement of the problem, an analytic or numerical equation solution and a graph of the results). Finally, the results can all be ported back and forth and printed/stored, etc. between the Classpad Manager software/emulator and the calculator itself which is simply fantastic to use. I have had this for almost a month now and I am just begining to appreciate what it can do for me daily in my work as a scientist. If students get exposed to these devices in a late middle school curriculum and beyond (after they first master many of the basics of mathematics and science), in my opinion they will want to continue to grow into math and science in their later years and become excited leaders in science and engineering that this country has been famous for having for most of the last 60 years.

HP 17BII Financial Calculator Review

HP 17BII Financial Calculator
Average Reviews:

One of the best features of this calculator is that the calculations (i.e. present value/future value calculations and basic mortgage payment calculations)are menu driven using a series of buttons at the top of the calculator. You simply input the data per the associated input button. In addition, this calculator is a lot easier to use than the 12B which is the standard in the leasing industry. The 17B version allows you to input your data in a straight forward fashion rather than the "reverse" data input method of the 12C. HP also did a good job with the instructional booklet you receive with the calculator. The booklet gives you numerous sample problems and does a good job of highlighting the capabilities of the calculator in an easy to understand format without all the technical jargon. I wouldn't be without this calculator.

With the HP 17BII financial calculator, you can perform more than 250 business and statistical functions from wherever you happen to be. You can calculate loan payments, amortization, interest rates and conversion, internal rate of return, net present value, bond price and yield, depreciation, and percentages, to name only a few.
The bottom line on the two-line display shows the menu labels for the five major menus in the calculator: Financial, Business Percentages, Statistics, Time Manager, and Equation Solver. The menu keys allow you to shift between functions. The top line shows the numbers or letters you enter and the resulting calculation. Each menu has subfunctions and built-in variables for greater complexity. A beeper sounds when you press the wrong key, when an error occurs, or when you are late for an appointment.
The HP 17BII has 8,000 total bytes in RAM (6,750 bytes plus 1,250 for your built-in variables). You can monitor the available memory (both in bytes and percentages) by pressing shift-MEM. The calculator retains current functions until you press "clear data." If you accidentally shut the machine off, just turn it back on and your calculation will reappear. After 10 minutes of nonuse the calculator turns itself off, but your most recent information will still be there.
The HP financial calculator interfaces with an HP infrared printer (sold separately), allowing you to print tables, lists, and payment schedules whether you are--in a meeting or on an airplane.
A protective cover is included to keep your calculator dust-free. Batteries are already loaded, and the calculator is backed by a limited one-year warranty. --Dana Van Nest

HP 9G Scientific Calculator Review

HP 9G Scientific Calculator

The HP-9G is the smallest graphing calculator in my collection, roughly the size of a standard non-graphing scientific calculator. The keys have a solid feel and you can adjust the screen. HP also sends two extra batteries with the calcualtor.
Here are some pros/cons:
PROS:
* Very lightweight, for the days you don't feel like lugging around larger calculators
* Distribution functions (normal curve), fractions, base calculators
* Gradient mode (for those of who like to measure angles in gradients)
* Programming available (only 400 bytes though)
* Conversions and constants
* Stat regressions include quadratic regressions
CONS:
* Hard to get two equations graphed at the same time; only trace function available
* Doesn't readibly handle complex numbers (so you'll have to compensate when solving quadratic equations -- the instructions have an excellent example)
* No derivative and no integral function (this why this calculator only got four stars, I consider these two functions vital)
Texas Instruments equivalent: TI-36X with function graphing and programming capability. Worth it if you can get this discounted (thank you Amazon! :))

The touch sensitivity on this calculator is so bad, I can't type in numbers for fear of them not getting registered. It is frustrating when you're in meetings, trying to calculate something, only to have trouble inputing into the device. I used to have the HP 17BII, and that one was heaven. Solid as a rock, but it seems that when they made this new model and added a "+" sign to the title, they had it manufactured using cheap parts and shoddy craftmanship.

HP calculators are built to be used by professionals. They are built to a standard of quality you seldom see anymore. Unlike calculators from other manufacturers, people who use HP calculators tend to use them for a VERY long time! I have had my HP48g for 8 years now and it still measures up to the competition. YES RPN entry is different BUT it is FAR MORE efficient to use in lengthy or repetitve computations. Unlike Casio,Sharp, and TI, there is a tremendous amount of professional grade software for scientist and engineers widely available. There are games too. The HP48g is solid and it has an IR port as well as a serial port for connection to a computer or other device. This calculator is a powerhouse! If you are a science or engineering major and you want to be serious about your trade then this has to be a device you own!

This calculator is a cousin of the 10B finacial calculator (now discontinued). It's a good calculator with good button feel and a lot of preprogrammed functions including stats. However, the newer models have the keys and faceplate markings written in new colors that are hard to see. The picture on this page is of the old version of the calculator. The colors on the new ones make the calculator much harder to use in my opinion. They seem to get lost on the brown background.

A comprehensive scientific calculator, the Hewlett-Packard HP20Sfeatures easy-to-use algebraic entry and a built-in program library of over 100scientific and mathematic functions. The library has frequently used functionslike root finder, Simpson's rule of integration, complex number operations, 3x3matrix operations, quadratic formula, and curve-fitting programs--all at thetouch of a key. The HP20S also has essential trigonometry and math functionssuch as sine, cosine, tangent, exponential, and natural log and antilogfunctions.
With this calculator, you can also perform English/metricconversions and fast conversions for mass, distance, volume, and temperature. And with the algebraic entry system, you can enter algebraic notations just asyou would write them down on paper (a terrific time saver). For calculations youdo routinely, the HP20S can record your keystrokes for future use--a greatfeature when you are working on a long-term project or set of calculations thatyou'll need to access repeatedly.

This is a great item for the HP infrared calculators, where you need a written record. It prints on thermal paper, on a tape like old manual crank adding machines, but the comparisons end there. It handles complex algebraic formulas well, and they are easy to read.
But this item is touchy. Mine only really works on a clean desktop with a super stable line of sight to the calculator and in typical office lighting of a florescent and incandescant mix. My use of it outdoors sitting on an uneven surface enjoying the sunny weather while calculating away was a frustrating experience. Consider this as an item that is really only for indoor desktop use.

If you need a printer for your Hewlett-Packard calculator but don't want to mess with cords, this enhanced infrared printer offers an ingenious solution. Compatible with HP calculator models 48GX, 48G+, 19B2, 17B2, 38G, 39G, the printer is a sleek and compact companion, printing up to 80 characters per second (but frequently printing less) and utilizing modulated biphase encoding with error correction for accurate, precise printing.
The printer features two font sets, both ECMA094 and HP Roman-8, and can accommodate up to 24 characters per line and a maximum of 166 columns of continuous graphics, enough to keep even advanced users happy. The thermal printer uses four AA batteries and features an automatic shutdown for extended battery life. Each set of four batteries can print up to one roll of paper.

I really love my HP Business Consultant - even though I don't use half of the features that it offers. What I like the best: 1) shows you the results of your last three calculations - a real timesaver when you're doing comparisons; 2) remembers your last calculations even after you turn it off; 3) great rolodex feature that I use a lot; 4) a great travel alarm clock; 5) lot of functions available with a minimum of keystrokes; 6) easy to read display; 7) solid construction. The calculator is a bit bulky and is heavier than other calculators, but it helps me so much, it is worth it. I use it at work a lot instead of the calculators and adding machines provided, it is so much superior. Mine lasted for10 trouble-free years. Some of the keys are just starting to malfuntion, and I will replace it with the same model. Not too many electronic items that haven't been improved in 10 years - this is a very useful classic!

For every application there is a calculator, and for financial functions, this is it. The HP19BII features four display lines with 23 characters each, plus6,500 bytes of memory. Personal information management applications, currency and measurement unit conversions, and functions that help youtrack loan payments, interest rates, amortization, and internal rate orreturn make this calculator a must for all business applications.
Advanced users may find the calculator's functions a little dated. Itincludes the ACRS table for calculating depreciation applied to limitedpartnership assets, which was replaced by Modified ACRS (MACRS) in 1986.But many users will find that the extensive functions and programmabilitycompensate for this shortcoming. We especially appreciated the time anddata management functions like the alarm clock, calendar, appointments, anddate arithmetic, number lists, editing, sorting, and storing.

HP HP48GX RPN Expandable Graphic Calculator Review

HP HP48GX RPN Expandable Graphic Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a serious electronic engineering student in his senior year in college, calculations extensively revolve around converting units including bases as well as vectors. Compared to it's competitions from TI, it is such a no nonsense super-powerful engineering calculator that even the TI-92 doesn't come close to what this 48-GX can do. Entering numbers in RPN format may be quite tricky at first, but after about 4-hrs later, I came to prefer this format over the algebraic one. RPN totally eliminates the need of parenthesis. Algebriac fans can do algebriac entry and/or display too. It has a massive expendable equation library, so there is no need to carry around a ton of formula sheets. I also own a TI-85 and a CASIO FX-115W. Other than not being able to graph, the little $20 CASIO is much stronger and capable than the TI. It can do integration, derivatives, and can easily convert bases (HEX, BIN, DEC) and vectors (POL, REC). Up until I bought the 48-GX, I only used the CASIO. Now I don't have to use the CASIO anymore. I did some comparisons with my friends and found out that this HP calculator has all the ability of a TI-89 and a CASIO FX-2 as well as the usability of a CASIO-FX-115W, in addition to many more features, including easy expendable memory using cards which can be used like floppy disks to store infinite data, alarm clock, dnld and play music, x-fers to other 48-G/G+/GX by means of infrared light, symbolic calculations that can be converted into a numeric answer in one step, add/sub/mul/div polar and rectangular formats together in the same step, and don't forget the UNDO button when something goes oops. This is only to mention a few. It comes with an intro manual, and a very good comprehensive manual. If you are an engineer or a serious engineering student, one day alone with the 48-GX is all you need to famaliarize yourself with it, and chances are you'll never go back to a weak and overpriced TI again. If you don't need 3D analysis, HP-39G or CASIO FX-2.0 is recommendable, which are equal to TI-86. If you don't need graphing, CASIO FX-115W is a good choice.

HP 10B Financial Calculator Review

HP 10B Financial Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used (and own) many of the available financial calculators on the market. I "recommend" the HP-10B to my university finance students, both graduate and undergraduate.
The HP 10B is a directly positioned competitor to the TI-BA-II+, but HP's entry is superior. The keys feel more solid, the machine itself "seems" better made. Having worn out more than one of each, my experience has been that the HP has more staying power. And, the TI-BA-II+ often requires more keystrokes to accomplish the same tasks (i.e., NPV calculations). ...
The HP 10B has a well written manual, including examples on using the function. HP has the manual available on-line on their website for the inevitable time that the user needs it and has lost the original.
While there are cheaper financial calculators, it seems that this particular level is the minimum I would recommend to professionals or students. Less expensive versions, while saving a few dollars, miss important features. As a general rule of thumb, if the calculator can perform the "IRR" function, as this can, it will be able to handle pretty much any calculation into which the finance student, professonal, or banker will run. Lesser machines do not have this function.
Ironically, even larger fancier calculators, such as the venerable HP-12C, are in my estimation inferior as well. The 12C uses RPN logic which, while saving even more keystrokes, is simply foreign to most students. More importantly, some functions, such as the Time Value of Money functions, on the 12C require interpretation. On the 12C, for example, solving for the number of periods in an annuity, the value gets rounded UP to the next integer.
Strongly recommended as the best value in inexpensive financial calculators.

It is wider than I expected but is all good. Has many nice features. You can scroll though the data you entered and check for errors like you could with a printing calculator and unlike a paper one you can change the data if you find a mistake. Its like a adding machine without the paper. Also stores Tax rate and has the usual memory functions. This would be great for any retailer or shoper. Its a bit big for carrying arround but I wanted it to keep at my desk for doing simple calculations for gaming and online shoping. I like the Black Finish and blue accents too. And its HP so you know its good.
