I bought the software and the Desk Top Calculator for two reasons. I'm a redundent freak, and I hate going out to my truck to get the hand held, once I'm all tucked into my office. This stuff is in my book, strictly for the professional. I can't see a home owner spending this kind of money, just to use it once, or to build a doll house or a porch. No disrespect intended, but this particular item is better used by folks like me that build buildings & houses. I use to do everything with paper and pencile and a regular calculator, but I couldn't function with out this calculator anymore. Either working in the field or doing estimates from drawings. There are still times when the old way is the best way, but 80% of the time now, I just tap the correct keys and print it out from my PC if I want hard copy. Great tools once you properly learn how to use them. All you Pro's out there know I speak the truth.

I like the improvements to the product. It's easy to change modes, etc. I am just getting into the other features, I probably am using just a small fraction of its capabilities, but that's just ok with me. I previously used the scalemaster 2, and there was no learning curve getting used to the newest version. Thumbs up from an electrical contractor.

I am blown away by this device. I first tried the free download from the Calculated Industries web site. ... It is a full blown version, without any restrictions, but stops working after 30 days. After about day 5 I knew I had to have it. By buying Construction Master Pro, instead of CM IV, you are getting a much better looking unit, with more features, a cover that mounts on the back while in use so as to not get in the way, and you are currently getting a free software version of Pro as well. All of that for only a couple more dollars than the IV version makes it a no brainer.
I am making cabinets, windows, and doors. In all of those, especially the windows, you need to do a lot of calculating in fractions. That makes the math work tedious at best. I was finding common denominators, then adding subtracting, dividing, multiplying, etc. Having to convert all along the way was a major amount of factoring. This calculator thinks in fractions as well as the standard arithmetic format. So you can insert, 8 1/8", and 3 13/64" for example, and it does all of the figuring for you. Convert your answer to board feet for material costs, is only a couple of buttons away. How many yards of concrete do I need to make the footers, no problem. I want to build an arch top doorway, and need to know the total amount of distance of the half circumference. No problem, just put in the rise at the center, and the run across the base, and it gives you every piece of information you could possibly need to know. This is just scratching the surface. This will be a tool that I will use for a long time to come. As I grow accustomed to its many capabilities, I will use it more and more, for a wide array of applications.
Could we call this calculus? It seems like it. When you watch the included CD that comes with the included calculator software version, you will see a video tutorial that explains a lot of the functions. Some are best understood by practitioners of that specific trade, but it makes me want to learn.
How much roofing material do I need? Just put in the pitch, and the floor space, and it calculates the amount of material. How many cubic yards of soil do I need to fill in the hill leading up to a wall? How many yards of concrete do I order for a patio. Determining hip and valley rafters. What is their length, and angle, and where do you put the bird mouth? Everything is calculated, and displayed in some applications as a sub chart with all of the finished answers in the software version. So it is nice to have both. Whether you are at your desk, or in the field, every option is covered.
I highly recommend the Construction Master Pro, I can't remember when I was more excited about a tool. I can't wait to use the calculator in ever expanding roles.
The price here at Amazon was 10 or 20 percent lower than the other sources, or at best the same price as others, and included free shipping. My advice, buy it, and buy it here. I warn you though that if you download the free trial version, you will be hooked after using it only a few times. Hope this helps.

I laid out a complicated staircase in one attempt within 1/8" of my target. I can live with that anyday. Can't wait to build another house and cut the roof. Should be able to leave my "blue book" in the truck.

It's lightweight and easy to carry. It's not hard to use but it could be a little more straightforward. You have to enter the value, then press a button for which direction the conversion should go (without actually saying that; you have to guess or read the instructions), then press the specific conversion. Easy when you get used to it but the one I had before was completely intuitive. Still, worth the price.

I found the Sonin 2000 to be difficult to use. The largest defect is that if you make an error in entering data, say trying to add 3 feet to 5 meters, the calculator properly tells you that you have made an error, but then it essentially locks up. You can't get back to where you were in the calculation before the error. It has a memory register, but you can't just put a number there, you can only add to the number previously there. Also, the buttons and legends are too small and the feel of the buttons is not very good. (Sometimes the button doesn't make contact when you think it did, and you get thrown into errorland on the next key stroke.)(Sonin didn't reply to my email inquiry about the error problem.) I'd look into other calculators.

This is the third Calculated Industries construction calculator I've owned. I've purchased them because, to my knowlege, they are the only calculator available with these functions. As a residential designer I find it incredibly usefull for day to day calculations without the tedious conversions required to use numeric calculators. The ability to convert metric equivalents is also quite handy. Finally the Trig functions make this a fully capable tool.
As for disadvantages, the number entry is a little tiresome, to enter 1'6 1/2" you must press: 1, feet, 6, inch, 1, /, 2. But the pay off is worth while to get results in appropraite units. The other limitations of the calculator are the number of digits displayed, 7 is the most you're allowed to enter and it will give you errors if your result is greater than 8 digits. Also the Calculator does round, 13/16 divided by 2 equals 7/16, but we're only talking 1/32, but I'd rather see a decimal result in that case.
All in all the calc is super handy and has nearly allowed me to forget how to count by twelves and sixteens. It's the best solution until we all go metric.

Calculated Industries 4019 Materials Estimating Calculator Review

Calculated Industries 4019 Materials Estimating Calculator

I bought this calculator for an estimating class that I was taking. We had to regularly look at plans, do dimension takeoffs and add them all up in order to quantify building components. This calculator excels at quickly adding up feet/inch measurements (including fractions of an inch), as well as converting between cubic feet, cubic yards, etc. Entering dimensions is as easy as pressing 5 6 1 / 16 (to enter 5' 6-1/16"). You can do all the basic functions, multiplication, division, etc. When you multiply feet by inches, you can get the result in square inches, feet, or yards.
There are additional functions in the calculator that I haven't used very much. You can take a measurement and convert it to useful quantities, such as board feet, tons of gravel, gallons of paint, etc. You can even set a standard cost for the item so that you can then calculate a price. For instance, you can do a takeoff of a wall, find that it's 450 square feet, then convert that to gallons of paint, and then convert that to a price.
The calculator is nice because it's got a flip cover that's hard and will prevent the buttons from being pressed while it's in your backpack or pocket. The bright yellow plastic is nice because I've already caught myself leaving it behind twice. It can run on either solar power or the internal battery. There's a little door in the back of the calculator that opens up so that you can store the manual with it. The calculator comes with two versions, one in Spanish and one in English. The manual is easy to follow and provides lots of examples on how to use the fancier functions.
Definitely a great buy. Even if you're only using this to add up fractions and quickly convert between units, it's well worth it. It's more convenient and definitely faster than using my TI-89 to do the same thing. It's also way cheaper too. One gripe I have is that it doesn't display more digits. Not a big deal, but when you're multiplying large jobs and calculating costs, it will give you an error if the answer is over 7 digits (ie. it can only go up to 9,999,999).
Make sure to read the manual or keep it with the calculator. There are a lot of cool features it has, but unless you use them regularly, you'll need to refer to the manual in order to see how to get the functions to work.

Having tried many feet/inch/fraction calculators, I must say this is by far the easiest to use, and the case it comes in can take a beating while protecting the keypad. There's even a compartment to keep the operator's manual with the calculator and protected (which you will use on occasion for calculations that you don't do every day). I have had the predecessor to this model, the Construction Master 4 for years, use it daily, and still have never had to change the battery.

I have been using my inchmate calculator for 10 years extensivly in my job as a mechanical designer. It is a great calculator and very fast. It helps me in adding and subtracting dimensions for layout of construction documents. The one I have does not have the rise, run, and slope features but square and square root keys acheive the same results just a little slower. The only improvement that the manufacturer could enhance for this calculator is the incorporation of sine, cosine, and tangent keys for trigonometric calculations. These features would win a five plus star rating for this already great calculator.

If you build or design things you know the importance of working with accurate dimensions. The most frustrating and costly construction headaches can usually be traced to dimensional errors. The Sonin DT110 InchMate+ Construction Calculator is for people who work with dimensions. The simple measurements (Foot - Inch - Fraction, or fif) you make with rulers or tape measures become difficult and tedious when you try to add and subtract them, let alone multiply and divide. The InchMate+ calculates these dimensions automatically. It was designed to be incredibly easy to use. It has a patented "self-prompting" system leading through the process of entering fif dimensions, and accepts inputs of to 1/16" - the practical limit of accuracy for common building and design projects.

Fine Homebuilding recently ran an article about framing a dormer that included step-by-step instructions about how to use this calculator to generate complete measurements to do much of the framing in advance on the ground. After reading the article and watching a framer I sometimes work with use one to run circles around truss manufacturing company representatives, I decided it was time to buy one for my own use.
I have a science background so I initially leaned toward buying the more expensive trig model, but decided on the regular one because it has the following features not available on the trig model: quantity estimators for various sizes of drywall sheets; volume estimators for concrete footers, slabs, & circular piers; and estimators for various sizes of brick and blocks. I carry a Palm Pilot with me that has trig functions in case I need them, but for the remodeling work I do, I haven't needed any trig values now that I no longer manually do trig calculations. The calculator can generate angles, hypotenuse lengths, side lengths, areas, volumes, etc. based on a few known quantities. For example, if two sides of a triangle (can be regular sides or one side and a hypotenuse) are known, it'll give the angle / pitch. Likewise, if the angle and one side are known it'll generate lengths for the other two sides. I've found that I no longer have a need for trig values since blueprints and field measurements only involve lengths and angles / pitches which this calculator is set up to work with.
A different reviewer was bothered that this calculator rounded to the nearest 1/16th of an inch. That's the default factory setting, but it can easily be changed to a different accuracy level all the way down to 1/64th of an inch. I keep mine set to 1/32th of an inch.
I've been using the Construction Master Pro on the job for about a month now and it has really sped up my calculations as well as helped avoid errors, especially when I'm tired. I occasionally use it to determine quantities of shingles and bricks needed for a job or to do complex calculations involving a variety of angles (it has crown molding functions for irregular walls that have replaced the charts I used to carry in my truck), but most of the time I use it for simple calculations like dividing measurements.
Here are two examples: I needed to put in a diagonal brace for a two-piece rack that held trim for a job so I just measured the height of one side of the rack and the horizontal distance between the two supports and the calculator gave me the length and plumb cut angles for my diagonal brace that went from the top of one side to the bottom of the other. This took about 10 seconds and my piece fit perfectly. To determine the number of shingles I needed for a roof, I entered length and width of the area below the roof and the roof's pitch and it calculated the area of the sloped roof as well as the number of squares and bundles of materials.
Other features that I find useful include: stair calculations (with some powerful features including limiting maximum riser heights, specifying various tread lengths, limiting the number of risers, etc.), hip / valley roof framing calculations, estimating the number of studs needed for a job, calculating rake wall stud cut angles and lengths, arc calculations, and squaring calculations (no more need to use multiples of 3-4-5; any numbers will do). Features I probably won't use much include board foot calculations, conical volumes, and tonnage calculations.
This calculator isn't a substitute for good construction knowledge and the ability to visualize the process, but it sure can help take these skills to the next level.
