PalmOne IIIc Personal Handheld Organizer Review

PalmOne IIIc Personal Handheld Organizer

A missed appointment prompted me to puchase a PDA. I had tested the early PalmPilot's but never needed one before. I bought (like many other reviewers here) a Palm Vx for $399. I used this for a week before exchanging it for a IIIc. Same price, same memory, same processor, a little larger, more accessories, and COLOR! With the included plastic flip cover in place, I can put the IIIc into my pocket without much worry of damage (as long as I don't sit on it). Unless you HAVE to have the wireless features of the VII, or you only have the budget for an M100, the IIIc is the way to go.

Sharp Wizard OZ-590A Electronic Organizer Review

Sharp Wizard OZ-590A Electronic Organizer

First and foremost, this product is NOT for people who are -
1. Looking for the 65K or more colorful display.
2. Looking for E-mail synchronization.
3. Looking for wireless connectivity or surfing the net.
4. And finally looking for MP3 playing or huge data storage etc.
That said, this product is VERY USEFUL for people, like me, who -
1. Do NOT want to spend a lot on features that we will rarely use.
2. Do NOT want to worry about charging their units every half a day so as to not lose data (this pda runs on 1 alkaline battery and hence, we just change it every month at the most).
3. Want to just get organized with their basic data such as contact numbers, addresses, emails, urls, memos, to-dos, anniversaries, reminders, expenses etc.
4. Want to use a very simple interface and yet have all the necessary stuff we need.
5. Do NOT care whether they input their data through graffiti or an on-screen keyboard (this PDA does not have graffiti or any hand-writing technology).
I like the touch sensitivity levels and the ease-of-use. It is very light-weight and very slim and small.

This PDA is designed for people who wish to use it for basic tasks that pda's are intended for such as editing documents taking notes, and organizing your life. It also has the ability to be an mp3 player and a video device with the addition of an sd memory card (inexpensive on ebay).
While it does have a smaller amount of memory then some other PDA's you have to remember it is an entry level device designed for what was mentioned above. Other devices cost hundreds of dollars so you are getting a basic PDA for a low price as opposed to a $300 PDA with more memory and capabilities such as wi-fi
That being said you can add those capabilities to this PDA. Blue tooth and wi-fi cards can be added and sd cards for increased memory. This PDA can also run all basic applications and some of the more tasking ones including games such as age of empires.

Instead of improving the Sharp Organizer with new technology, this product cannot hold a candle to its predecessors. Earlier generations had greater capacity, durability, ease of use, and reliability. The programming for this product is inflexible, the data capacity is ridiculously low, it is physically flimsy and actually I went straight to the wastebasket with it. A total waste of money.

Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) Review

Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver)

I bought my Edge through the Handspring Website because they weren't available any where else at the time. I've been happy with it, even thought the first one crashed, and they had to send me a new one. They sent the replacement next day air and I haven't had a single problem since. I bought the Edge instead of the Handspring Platinum because the Edge was quite a bit thinner and had an internal rechargeable battery so I didn't have to spend a fortune on AAA batteries. The Palm V is the closest relative to the Edge in the Palm family, but I thought that Handspring had a better product with their Springboard module. I've already purchased the one step back up module which works great when you're away from your computer. In addition, I purchased the InnoPak/2V vibrator along with a Handspring belt type carrying case so that I can wear my Edge and have it vibrate for appointments. I figure that if it's on my belt I'll get that much more utility out of it. The only thing that I don't like about the Edge is that it's a new enough model that I'm not able to get all the accessories for it yet like the Targus foldable keyboard and the travel charger/synch cable.

Handspring Visor Platinum (Silver) Review

Handspring Visor Platinum (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This model of Visor is more expensive than Visor Deluxe, so what's their difference?
I'll list the difference btw Deluxe and Platinum, and let you be the judge to which one to buy.
-First, Visor Platinum is the FASTEST PalmOS PDA with its 33mhz processor. Other PalmOS PDAs have either 16mhz or 20mhz. Visor deluxe has 16mhz. However, the speed of the PDA is a little overrated, since most Palm application do not require high speed processor anyway. but hey, the faster the better, right?
-Second, Visor Platinum has 4 bits display while Visor Deluxe has only 2 bits display. This means that, Platinum can display 16 levels of greyscale, while Deluxe can display only 4 level of greyscale.
-Third, Platinum has PalmOS version 3.5 while Deluxe has version 3.1. This is important because you can not upgrade PalmOS on Handspring's PDA (due to USB problem). So, this means you'll be stuck with which ever PalmOS that comes with your Visor forever. But this is not a big problem as it may sounds, b/c any PalmOS's are essentially the same thing.
-Lastly, Platinum has cool sophisicated silver color, while Deluxe has teenage iMAC style colors.
Another product I recommend if you are considering buying Visor Platinum is PalmIIIxe. PalmIIIxe also has 4 bits display like Platinum, and it also comes with PalmOS version 3.5. I'll make a list of difference btw Visor Platinum and PalmIIIxe for you. (Note that this list also include some of the differences btw Visor Deluxe and PalmIIIxe)
-PalmIIIxe is the same price as Visor Deluxe, which is about fifty bucks cheaper than Platinum
-PalmIIIxe comes with only 16mhz processor like Visor Deluxe
-Visor has expansion module, which means alot, you can add many many feature afterward, you can make your Visor am MP3 player too! And you can also easily add more memory to your Visor, while for PalmIIIxe, you can only add 2MB flashcard.
-When you buy a leather case for your Visor, you dont have to stick a valcro to the back of your PDA like you have to for Palm. (Palm need a Valcro to hold it to the case, while for Visor, there's a plastic holder attach to the back of the leather case, so you can jsut put your Visor securely in there)
-Visor comes with a fast USB cradle while Palm comes with slow serial cradle, so if you buy palm and want a fast synconizing, you'll need to buy a USB cradle separatly.
-Visor comes with a good quiality stylus, it has solid feel of metal, and if you open it up, there's a little screw driver and a reset pin inside. Palm comes with a piece of plactic stylus; buy a new stylus cost about fifteen dollars.
Are these difference worth the more money you pay for Platinum? Let yourself be the judge, see what you need.

The Handspring Visor, the first infinitely expandable handheld computer, is now even faster. In fact, the Visor Platinum is 50% faster than the Visor Deluxe. The Visor Platinum gives you enhanced power, speed and performance so you can access all your data and view crisp grayscale graphics without the wait. And, like the Visor, it comes with the unique Springboard expansion slot, so you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem or even a phone. Best of all, it is Plug and Play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works! If you're one of those people who uses lots of RAM, keeps tons of records, plays games or uses apps that have high-performance requirements, the Visor Platinum has the very speed you need. Now you can access all your data without the wait. And the grayscale graphics - with 16 shades of gray - are so crisp that every picture is as clear as day. What's more, since the Visor Platinum is based on the latest Palm OS, it's got new usability, security and navigation features, too.

Since this is my 1st PalmOS PDA I don't have as much experience as some other reviewers. However I do know what I do & do Not like. My list of Pros & Cons for this fine PDA:

Pros specific to this device:
1. Ability to display 65,000 different colors.
2. You can create notes/ business cards w/ color.
3. You can read and work faster. One thing I've found that's quicker than reading, to ID something, is color. If I label an item in a To-Do list in red for instance, I know w/o reading that its a hot item to do ASAP. This helps one prioritize items. It just makes sense.
4. CPU speed. This units fast. Although the color display DOES make the unit slightly slower than a Visor Pro/Platinum.
5. Color games beat B/W games when in waiting rooms. ;-)
6. Display easier to read indoors than a Palm m505. (Isn't this where 90% of its use will occur anyway?)
Cons specific to this unit:
1. Battery life. Handspring advertises up to 2 wk. between charges. Yea right! Maybe if you only use it for

Royal Excelsior 384kb memory touch sreeen organizer, 6-line backlit display, PC sync software

Just to make it clear for everyone, despite what the enclosure looks like, this thing is -nothing- like a palm, and doesn't even really fit in the same category.
For anyone who has seen those little cheap data organizers with the "chicklet" keypads and the 4-6 line text displays, that's what this is, repackaged into a prettier case and given a semi-touch screen rather than the keypad.
Immediately after taking it out of the package I had doubts - the screen (which is hidden behind a "demo sticker" before purchase) has visible lines running through it, the "wiring" for the touch screen. Bothered me at first, but I didn't notice it much after a little bit of use.
The touch-pad also took some getting used to - so they could save money on the display they have letters and numbers side-by-side under the same touch-sensitive area rather than pixelizing them and having them occupy the same space - as a result, you can hit numbers straight-on with your stylus and they work, but letters you have to hit just to the right of the letter. Much frustration ensued before I figured this out and I kept wondering why I kept getting I's when I was pressing O, etc.
It claims to be able to syncronize with Outlook 2000 but I have been unable to do so correctly - after several tries and experimentations I have so far only been able to sync my to-do list and memos - it won't sync calendar events or phone numbers at all. There don't appear to be any options in the sync software as far as what gets synced, and there was absolutely no documentation at all included with the software other than the "help" screens within the program.
I haven't tested functionality with the included PIM software - I suspect it would work better with it, but that's not what I bought it for. Without Outlook sync functionality it's basically useless to me.
Although I was pretty much expecting it with a digital organizer in this price category, the user interface I should mention is pretty non-intuitive as well. On calendar views, each date can have up to three dots next to it - one dot means a to-do item, another dot means an anniversary item, and yet another dot means a schedule item. You have to remember which dot means which. No matter what section you are in, you can only view one item at a time - you don't get a "list" of to-do items, for example, you have to go through them one at a time.
This thing might be OK for someone who doesn't use Outlook and doesn't have much data to go through every day or doesn't need any "at-a-glance" views, and you can get used to the quirky data entry system (I almost think sticking with the chicklet keys would work a lot better) - but pretty much anyone else needs to pass this one by and save up a little more cash towards a "real" PDA.

Palm Z22 Handheld Review

Palm Z22 Handheld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After 10 years Palm have finally returned to their roots and released
a PDA. Not a wannabe phone/walkman/portable dvd/game console/wireless
web browser/photo album/book. It's an actual, honest to God, Personal
Digital Assistant. Yes, it can do some of those other things too, but
I'm not having to pay for expensive features like bluetooth and hifi
quality audio.
The Z22 is being marketed as an entry level PDA. But that's wrong. I
am a long time PDA user who has owned, among other devices, a Palm
Pilot Professional, an m505, a Zire 71 and a Tungsten T3. But this is
my favourite device of all. For a start it's the best looking PDA ever
sold. Palm must have taken a leaf out of Apple's book. When I look at
my Z22 I think it could have dropped out of the clean futuristic sets
of movie like 2001. This is the future that Stanley Kubrick promised
us and never arrived. But at least my Palm looks like it's from that
future. It's also light due to not being weighed down by a metal case
and a ton of hardware I don't want.
It does all the usual PDA stuff well: Calendar, Memos, Contacts and so
on. 32MB is completely adequate for these tasks, even if you decide
to add photos to your contact list. For these tasks the hardware is
completely up to the task.
I also use my Z22 for reading eBooks. It's great for this. 160x160 is
enough for completely clear text. Unfortunately I do miss one feature
of my T3 - the SD card slot. Without this I can't use my unabridged
Webster's dictionary that weighs in at 37MB. But the 10MB Webster's is
good enough for most tasks.
One place where I feel Palm have cut corners is the display. There are
sometimes unsightly vertical streaks in it, I'm guessing due to using
a poor digital-to-analogue converter. For most tasks this isn't an
issue. Photos can look a little ugly however and you often see aliasing
artifacts. One place where the poor display quality is visible is when
you read books in autoscroll mode. The display really isn't fast enough to
keep up with scrolling text. But hey, this device costs $100 new!
The device has only 2 application buttons instead of the usual
4. Surprisingly I haven't noticed the loss at all.
There are a couple of other annoyances that are common to almost
all current PDAs so I'll just list them quickly: difficult to replace
battery, display not visible in sunlight (unlike my Palm Pilot), use of
Graffiti2/Jot making reliable text entry next to impossible (Palm won
the lawsuit, bring back Graffiti 1!).
Palm have dropped the universal connector in favour of a new small USB
port. That means I can't use my old peripherals. I do hope I can use my
wireless keyboard however, when Palm release Z22 drivers.
By paring down the PDA to its essentials Palm have made a winner. But
there's one feature I would have liked to have kept - the SD card
slot. Providing such a slot would at least have given a choice about
how much to spend on storage. But like I say, apart from the dictionary
I don't miss it that much. (Hmmm...I have to admit that I did enjoy
playing Infocom games on my T3 using Clifrotz too, but I'll survive...)

If you're still using a paper planner, maybe it's time to catch up with technology and upgrade to the affordable and easy-to-use Palm Z22 handheld. It enables you to keep your entire day-to-day schedule and contact information at hand and in your pocket--no more flipping throughmultiple pages, looking for scraps of paper or keeping track of to-do lists. And you won't have to enter the same thing twice--once on the computer and once in your planner, as you can easily make updates on your computer and synchronize data to the Palm Z22 in just a minute or two.
This handheld features a 32 MB of flash memory (20 MB accessible for file and software storage), Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet), a fast 200 MHz ARM-based processor, and an internal rechargeable battery (that can be charged via the included AC adapter or via the USB cable connected to your PC).
Weighing just over 3 ounces and about the same size as a deck of playing cards, the Palm Z22 is compact and stylish with a white front and translucent blue backing. Small enough to fit into any purse, backpack or back pocket, it boasts a bright, 160 x 160-pixel color touchscreen display, which provides easy readability of names, addresses, and appointments. You can even color-code appointments for improved organization, and view and carry pictures of friends and family wherever you go.

Windows users can synchronize their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:
Contacts: Lets you store several addresses for each contact, and with new fields for more phone numbers, multiple e-mail addresses, instant messenger IDs, and Web sites.
Calendar: Use the new Agenda view to see upcoming calendar events, tasks due, and important e-mail, and color-code your events to provide an easy way to reference your calendar in the Agenda, Day, Week, and Month views. Take more notes, or synchronize more details from your desktop, in the larger Memos and Notes fields.
Tasks: Use tasks with alarms and repeating tasks to set reminders for important commients.
It also includes AddIt, a program that includes a variety of applications such as CheckSplit, Chess, Carb Counter and Solitaire. The bonus software CD-ROM has an eBook reader with three books and a dictionary, the powerOne Calculator (perfect for basic and advanced mathematics), and SplashShopper (a helpful shopping list application).
Compatibility The Palm Z22 is compatible with PCs running Windows Windows 2000 (SP4) and XP (Outlook synchronization requires MS Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003; sold separately), and with Macs running Mac OS 10.2.8 to 10.4.
