(More customer reviews)This is a preliminary review, as I have just turned it on and haven't used many features just yet.
First off, the thing is fairly big, and none too light. It is certainly a desktop replacement, and will be treated as such. It will also serve for media entertainment, but I'm sure to get into that another time.
As this point, my immediate concern is the design and usability. The overall look of the thing is a pretty black plastic with silver trim. It seems sturdy enough, for the most part. However, the latch button has a funny loose quality that makes me wonder if any corners were cut to deliver this machine to me at such a low price. When I opened the screen, the hinge seemed a bit tight.
Once turned on, the screen is crisp and bright. I'm hoping that media plays back nicely on it. Windows Vista looks nice enough, but I did find that a clean copy of Vista takes up roughly 3x the space that XP did on a previous laptop. I hope to understand why, but I've heard it has much to do with the graphics built in and well as having a 64-bit OS. I'll live with it for now.
The only irksome part so far is the track pad. It's just to the left of the center for some odd reason, and the surface really sticks to the fingers. It would seem like a no-brainer to give the track pad that kind of texture that allows folks to glide over the surface without getting hung up. Also, the buttons are really soft, like mushy brakes in a car. It seems like a quick click rarely does anything, and I even found myself having to hold the left button down to get a response from it.
That's it for the time being, but I'll hopefully be able to report on the full capabilities soon enough.
Just in case anyone is curious, I am a Mac user, and would have preferred getting a Macbook Pro if it weren't for the outrageous cost. This PC was on sale for less than half of the Mac. If it can do half the things I need, then it was a good purchase until I can afford better.
