(More customer reviews)Update Sep 2010. The product photo has been changed since I posted my original review. The photo they were using was misleading in that it looked like the product had a backlight. This unit does not have any backlighting which makes it useless in dim lighting such as a dimly lit cockpit at night. The display is more like what one would find in a very cheap child's electronic toy at the bottom of a cereal box. The display is black characters on a grey background. Even in optimum lighting the display is difficult to see in anything other than direct viewing. Move your angle of view slightly off center and the display fades quickly. Additionally my unit had near dead batteries when it arrived. Naturally, I thought that might be the problem. New batteries improved the display but still no backlight. I thought the unit might be defective until I searched for other reviews throughout the Web. I wish I had done that before I bought it because lack of backlighting is a common complaint from other users. If you only plan to use it in optimum lighting conditions on the ground then you will probably be ok. However, if you thought you could use it "on the fly" forget it. You would need to hold a flashlight in your teeth to see this thing in a dimly lit cockpit. See if you can look at a friend's or check one out at your local FBO before buying. Additional comments: I guess I just assumed it would have a backlight since most electronic products made today do. I was surprised that what I expected to be a high quality product would be so cheaply made. The functions do work providing you can see them.
